Mediterranean Fan Worm was found in Pilot Bay and luckily quickly removed. This invasive marine pest is continually being found in more southerly locations in New Zealand as it spreads.

Make sure you keep your eye out for this nasty and report it.

The discovery of 81 Mediterranean fanworm (Sabella spallanzanii) on the sea floor in Pilot Bay was not the early Christmas present that the Bay of Plenty Regional Council dive team were wanting.

As part of our Kaukapakapa River Restoration Project, Danielle headed down the river on a kayak yesterday to check out the streambanks and ecology. She travelled from the salt water wedge down to a fully saline section of river and saw the transformation from freshwater plants to marine plants - a very cool afternoon.

Thanks for Heron for organising the event and Mt Rex Shipping for allowing us to get our kayaks out at their yard.

We are so happy to announce that we have launched the Kaukapakapa River Restoration Group. We are helping landowners within the catchment to undertake restoration activities.

We are using our skills and networks to bring together a range of organisations to help landowners.

This is going to lead to some very cool outcomes for te whenua, te tangata, me te Kaipara Moana.

It is Fall armyworm season, time to get out in the garden and get scouting.

Fall armyworm has yet to be found in New Zealand this spring, but growers are being told to keep an eye out.

First discovered in New Zealand in March last year, the pest can chew through more than 350 plant species.

Foundation of Arable Research (FAR) biosecurity officer Ash Mills spoke to Radio NZ this week and said the El Niño weather patterns could bring a new incursion in from Australia, so growers should keep a close eye on their plants.

More information on the fall armyworm is available on the FAR website.
