✅ Here are a couple of pro-tips for winter gardening. Broccoli is usually quite sturdy but sometimes strong winds can damage the stem leading to small broccoli heads. Use 3 stakes (120deg apart) to provide your broccoli with support. We use bamboo stakes from Bunnings. They won’t leach bad stuff in to your soil and are re-usable!
✅ For cauliflower, tie the big outer leaves together to cover the cauliflower head, in a process called blanching (not to be confused with the cooking method). Blanching helps keep the head away from too much sun exposure which can lead to yellowing and sometimes a bitter taste in cauliflower. Be careful not to tie the leaves too tight as that might lead to the leaves breaking off. Just tight enough to hold together is good enough.

Nourishing your soil in preparation for winter is so important! Apply plenty of compost (homemade is best, but store bought is also good!) and sheep pellets. You can also use other manures (chicken, cows etc) if you have access to it. Make sure it’s well rotted or you risk burning your plants.
You should also apply a soil inoculant like our Beneficial Microbe Solution. These bacteria and fungi help your plants and preps your garden for winter. Sign up for our next batch on our website, link in bio.
Finally and most importantly, take a step back and admire your garden. The connection you feel to your plants and the food they produce for you is so important. It helps with your mental health and is a form giving gratitude. Happy gardening everyone!

End of Feb is the perfect time to plant onion seeds in seed trays. Our all time favourite is the Pukekohe Long Keeper. The earlier you plant your seeds, the bigger the onions will be when they are ready to harvest. Transplant the seedlings when the green tops are about 10cm tall.

On this rainy Auckland day, I suddenly got the urge to go see if my agria potatoes were ready. I wasn’t disappointed!
4 seed potatoes turned into 3kg of perfect, 💯organic potatoes. Under each plant if found one mushy, watery potato which I assume was the original seed potato I planted 4 months ago.
There are more potatoes in the ground. I’ll dig them up as we need them. These ones today are going into a cottage pie for dinner! Perfect for a rainy day!

Here are some easy ways to make garden fertilizer at home, using common household ingredients.

While Bunnings, Kings Plant Barn and Mitre10 (did I miss anyone else?) are lined with commercial fertilizers, creating your own at home can be a gratifying and cost-effective endeavour. Here are 4 straightforw...
