As described by Auckland Art Gallery curator William McAloon in a 1996 article in ARTAsiaPacific magazine, the original Sky City Main Gaming Room, which opened 30 years ago today, was designed as '..an underseascape, dark and cavernous, with aqua-toned carpets and flickering lights above", [depicting the constellations of the Southern Sky]. "Neil Dawson's fibre-optic canoe..is anchored above the bar, reinforcing this fluid effect".
