On 30 April and 1 May, Open Christchurch returns for a celebration of Christchurch’s special spaces and hidden gems - including the Lyttelton Timeball Station!

The public can head inside the Timeball Station on Sunday 1 May to explore this example of Victorian technology and take in views of Lyttelton Port.

Contractors, Councils and the citizens of Hawke’s Bay can be justly proud of the hard work and achievements in restoring one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s leading Opera Houses after years of painstaking effort.

The restoration project has won several awards: the New Zealand Institute of Architects Heritage award in 2020, as well as a New Zealand Master Builders Commercial Projects Award and two Resene Colour Awards.

The Category 1 heritage-listed building was originally designed by Henry Eli White (1876-1952) who was also the architect of the St James Theatres in Auckland and Wellington. The opera house was designed in the Spanish Mission style and opened in 1915 as the Hastings Municipal Theatre.

In the early hours of September 4th 2010, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake shook Canterbury, New Zealand. While no deaths occurred in that quake, many historic stone buildings across the region were badly damaged by the strong earth tremors. The Church of the Holy Innocents, built in 1869 on the grounds of Mt Peel Station, was one of them.

In March 2016, restoration work began to repair the damage. Most significant was the the eastern wall, which had half collapsed in the quake, shattering the stained glass window in the process.

This video shows 18 months of restoration work at the Church compressed into a 4 minute timelapse movie.

Comprised of about 4,000 individual pieces of glass, the window of the Great Hall in the Arts Centre of Christchurch was removed to ensure its safety while major earthquake repair work was carried out on the Great Hall.

Two people worked on the window continuously for one year before it was reinstalled in November 2015. A new isothermal system has been installed to protect the window from exterior elements and to aid soundproofing. The total estimated cost of the window restoration is $130,000.

In December 2015, the window was rededicated to the memory of all staff and students who served in World War One and who previously attended an institution once based on the site now known as the Arts Centre: Canterbury College, the School of Engineering, the School of Art, Christchurch Boys’ High School and Christchurch Girls’ High School. In addition, the 235 who perished are now honoured with dedication plaques that sit beneath the window.

It depicts the service of humanity by action and thought and includes possibly the most portraits found in any 20th century English stained glass window.
