A single visit sparked a national-scale idea.

After Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister visited a site in New Zealand developed by Blue Phoenix Group and designed by Smith architects, an invitation followed—to explore a new model for Fiji.

Gaia (Earth) is the result.

Now recognised globally—receiving the Green World Award “Champion of Champions”—the initiative brings together native reforestation, cocoa agroforestry, and Fiji’s first Dark Sky Zone to create a new, high-value, land-led economy.

Smith Architects have collaborated with Blue Phoenix Group again to design low-impact bamboo villas and shared spaces embedded within the regenerating landscape—architecture that supports the forest, protects the night sky, and enhances immersion.

More than a project, Gaia (Earth) explores how architecture can operate within a wider system—supporting the realignment of land, economy, and culture.

Wai Ariki, Rotorua — more than a spa.

An immersive experience where tikanga Māori is embedded into the architecture and the rituals themselves. The journey through water and mud becomes a way of understanding a deeper worldview — connection to land, wellbeing, and whakapapa.

What stood out was how many international visitors were there, seeking something authentic to Aotearoa — and finding it.

This is New Zealand at its best: contemporary design expressing culture with depth, clarity, and care.

Today at Wai Ariki in Rotorua — an experience that goes far beyond a spa.

What’s been created here is something rare: an immersive cultural environment where architecture, landscape, and tikanga Māori are not layered on as decoration, but are fundamentally embedded in the experience itself.

From arrival through to the bathing rituals, there is a clear narrative — one that speaks to the relationship between people, land, water, and wellbeing. The design doesn’t just house the experience; it teaches. It guides visitors through an understanding of the healing qualities of geothermal waters and mud, while simultaneously expressing a deeper Māori worldview — one grounded in connection, respect, and whakapapa.

You can feel this in the spatial sequencing, the materiality, the movement between spaces, and the way the rituals are structured. There is a quiet clarity and intentionality throughout — a sense of care.

What was particularly striking was the number of international visitors. People actively seeking something authentic, meaningful, and uniquely of Aotearoa — and finding it here. Not a surface-level cultural gesture, but a genuinely rich, layered experience.

This is where New Zealand is at its best.

Using contemporary design not to dilute culture, but to elevate and communicate it. Creating places that are both globally compelling and deeply local. Spaces that educate, restore, and connect.

Wai Ariki feels like a powerful example of how architecture can carry culture forward — and how design can become a vessel for storytelling, identity, and wellbeing.

A reminder that when we design with care, depth, and authenticity, we create more than buildings — we create understanding.

Why do we love glass?:

It’s not just about aesthetics.

Humans are wired to prefer environments where we can:
– see out
– understand our surroundings

Environmental psychology calls this prospect.

Studies have shown that access to views — especially of nature — can:
– reduce stress
– improve mood
– support recovery

(Ulrich, 1984)

Glass gives us that connection.

It lets us:
– stay aware
– feel oriented
– stay connected to the world outside

That’s why these spaces feel better.

Not because they look good.

Because they align with how we’re wired.
