🌳 Tree removal by drone - now from another angle.

Our Riverhead drone removal gained plenty of attention, so here’s another look at how it all came together.

The dead oak was leaning directly over the dock at The Riverhead NZ. Instead of lowering every section onto the wharf and hauling it through the restaurant, Steve cut the tree into manageable sections while Ben from Vantage Drones flew them straight to the chipper.

Up to 100 kg at a time. No dragging through the restaurant. Less disruption below.

A genuinely different solution to a difficult tree removal - and possibly a New Zealand first.

Another brilliant video put together by Nat from Oak & Echo The full operation looks even better from the air.

Would you trust a drone with a piece of tree this size? 🚁🌳

We found this little fella tucked up in the canopy, patiently waiting to be rescued. Apparently, it wasn’t quite ready to fly the nest.

If your drone chooses a tree as its new home, don’t risk climbing after it. Hardfell provides safe drone retrieval across Auckland.

No drones were harmed during this rescue. 🌳

A team that laughs together works better together. 🍳🏎️🐄

Last week we told the crew we had an all-day safety meeting planned...

Turns out, the only thing we were really planning was a surprise morale day. 😅

The day kicked off with breakfast at Blossoms Cafe before we jumped into a hired van... which promptly broke down. No worries though, a few tradies, a few tools, and we had it sorted and were back on the road.

Next stop was The E-Volt Racing Matakana Go-Karts in Matakana, where three races settled the bragging rights.

🏆 1st place - Kimble 🐄 Last place - Moana, who earned himself the honour of wearing the cow costume for the rest of the day.

After grabbing some lunch we headed to Slate Pool Bar in NorthWest. The rules were simple... lose a game of pool, wear the cow suit. Safe to say it got plenty of use. 🤣

By the time we got back to the yard we'd laughed so much that some of us were in tears.

Days like this remind us that building a great team isn't just about working hard. It's about looking after each other, having a laugh, and creating a workplace people genuinely enjoy being part of.

We've got an awesome crew at Hardfell, and they absolutely deserved a day like this.

Cheers team. Monday's back to climbing trees. 🌳💪

Has the frost turned your ficus hedge brown?

Don’t rush to cut it back. Brown leaves do not always mean the hedge is dead, and heavy trimming too early can remove healthy growth or expose the hedge to further frost.

We’ve put together a practical guide explaining what frost damage looks like, when to wait and when ficus hedge trimming should be carried out.

Storm-damaged trees can be far more dangerous than they look.

WorkSafe New Zealand recently issued a warning after reports of people being seriously injured while clearing damaged trees following storms.

A partly fallen tree, hung-up branch or windblown tree can be holding a huge amount of stored tension. Make the wrong cut and that load can release very quickly.

Some of the biggest risks include:

🟩 Trees and branches under compression or tension
🟩 Partially uprooted trees and unstable root plates
🟩 Hung-up limbs and trees caught in other trees
🟩 Using chainsaws around unstable timber
🟩 Trying to pull damaged trees with vehicles or machinery

Cleaning up a fallen branch on the lawn is one thing. Dealing with a large storm-damaged tree under load is very different.

If you're unsure, keep people clear and get someone experienced to assess it first.

WorkSafe's full warning is worth a read here: https://www.worksafe.govt.nz/about-us/news-and-media/storm-damaged-trees-dont-risk-it/

Hardfell provides emergency and hazardous tree work throughout Auckland.

Stay safe out there.

Tiny tool. Big expectations. 👀✂️

We've been putting the new Milwaukee Tool NZ M12 Pruning Shears through their paces to see if they deserve a spot in the ute.

First impressions?

They're definitely heavier and a bit more cumbersome than a good pair of hand secateurs, so they won't replace them for every job.

But they absolutely have their place.

When you're making repeated larger cuts, they take a lot of the effort out of the work and help reduce hand fatigue over the course of the day. The cuts are clean, they're quick, and so far they've been a pleasure to use.

So far, so good. We'll keep putting them to the test on real jobs over the coming weeks before giving our final verdict.

Have you used a pair yet? We'd be keen to hear what you think.

Danny picked the wrong tree… 🐈🌳

We got tagged in a local Facebook post today after Danny decided the top of a kānuka tree in a council reserve looked like a good place to hang out.
Chloe had been trying to get him down, so I headed over, climbed up, secured Danny and brought him safely back to the ground.

Safe to say, Chloe was pretty happy to have him back.
When she asked what she owed us, the answer was the same as always - we don’t normally charge for cat rescues.

If someone really wants to contribute, we’d much rather they put that money towards an animal charity like Paws Restart Animal Rescue

Just another slightly different day at Hardfell. 😂
