🍂 Winter has arrived, and while the garden may seem quieter, this season is full of possibility.

June is one of my favourite times of the year. It's the season for slowing down, dreaming, and laying the foundations for the months ahead.

You don't need a huge garden or endless hours to grow something meaningful.

Even a few herbs, some garlic, or a pot of spinach can become the beginning of a garden that nourishes you and your family.

This month, I'd love to explore the idea of growing not just food, but wellbeing.

What are you hoping to grow this winter? 🌱

Sundays are the best when you have something delicious to eat! This weekend I made focaccia for our sunday lunch. Made a delicious sandwich of nz spinach, bacon, cheese, pickled cucumbers and mayo. Realised the need for tomato relish, something I never managed to make this year. On the list for next!

Someone commented recently that they thought I had always been healthy and organised because of all the gardening, preserving and cooking I do.

And I laughed.

Because life doesn't always work out like that.

The truth is, somewhere over the last 14 years, life happened.

Motherhood happened.

Healing happened.

Heartbreak happened.

Stress happened.

Working full-time happened.

Studying happened.

Single parenting happened.

Trying to stand on my own two feet happened.

And like many women, I became very good at putting everyone else's needs before my own.

Not because I wanted to.

But because that's what needed to be done.

You just keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Until one day you realise you've become so busy surviving that you've forgotten to really care for yourself.

Maybe that's just part of being human.

But perhaps there comes a time when we stop surviving and start living ag*in.

I think I'm arriving at that point.

And honestly?

I'm quite excited about what comes next. 💚

You may think you already know why I've decided that it's time to change some habits and kick life up a gear.

And no, it's not just because I've become a little too familiar with the scales.

Truthfully, this journey has been years in the making.

It's been shaped by motherhood and all that comes with it. By healing after giving birth. By finding the strength to leave an unhealthy relationship and learning to stand on my own two feet. By raising a child on my own, working full-time, studying, navigating difficult jobs, stress, migraines, heartbreak, and all the many decisions that life asks us to make.

Like so many women, I've spent years putting one foot in front of the other and simply doing what needed to be done.

But recently, some things have brought me back to what really matters.

My sister has undergone a procedure that may help protect her from the bowel cancer that runs through our family. And with rising costs forcing me to let go of my health insurance, I've been reminded that there are some things we simply can't afford to ignore.

Our health is one of them.

So tonight, as I sit beside the fire with a glass of wine and write this, I wonder if perhaps you might take a moment for yourself too.

Find a quiet place.

Grab a journal.

And ask yourself:

🌿 What keeps coming to mind as you've followed this story?

🌿 What habits or distractions are quietly taking up more space in your life than you'd like?

🌿 If nothing changed over the next five years, would you be happy with where you're heading?

These aren't questions that need immediate answers.

I'm still discovering mine.

But maybe that's where change begins—not in grand gestures, but in simply being honest with ourselves.

That's what this year is about for me.

Growing food.

Moving my body.

Finding peace.

Nourishing my health.

And learning, one season at a time.

I'll be sharing plenty online, but more via email. I'd love to have you along for the journey. 💚

Perfect task to do on a wet winters day....STOCK!
I save all the carrot peels, celery end and leaves, leftover herbs and onion skins in a bag in the freezer for weeks/months. Same with the chicken bones after a roast.
When I am ready, I pop it all in a pot
Pour water over them all. Add a couple of tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to help get the good stuff out of the vege and chicken.

I always start with a smaller pot (my 4l pot) 🙄 and then soon realise I have too much for the pot after I add the water. Then I have to get the big pot from the cupboard which sits behind all my jars and other crap and means I have to do all the other tasks I've been putting off (i.e. like putting my jars away) before I can get the pot out.
So here we are finally with the pot chocka simmering away.
I'll let it simmer away all day. What you get is the perfect stock for soups, stews and risotto!

While I was cleaning my son's room, I found all the apples he hadn't eaten.
So when I decided that I'd better bottle the granny Smith apples mum dropped off from a family member's tree, I thought instead of wasting them as they'd gone a little soft, I'd add them to the rest I had. so let's get on with bottling them for winter desserts or as apple sauce when I finally cook that pork roast!

Hello Garden Lovers,
Who's else has always wanted to grow their own garlic?
It’s garlic season in the Waikato and now is definitely to get planting.
I’ve been having lots of lovely chats lately about when to plant garlic, which varieties grow well locally, and how to get a good harvest without overcomplicating it.
So I decided to put together a simple garlic growing guide for anyone wanting to give it a go here in the Waikato 🌱
It’s very beginner-friendly and covers simple tips for planting, growing, and harvesting garlic at home.
If you’d like a copy, flick me a message, and I will send it to you!

It's cold and flu season! After 5 days home sick with a sick child, I've woken to a sore throat. Thyme tea and honey is perfect to help soothe my throat and maybe kill some bugs in the process
