Our calendar says spring… but the chilly strong winds, frosty starts and rainy cold days say otherwise ❄️🌱
Still, it’s the perfect time to set the garden and tools up for success!
Here’s my early spring checklist for strong, healthy soil and sharp garden hand tools…
🧪 Applying our home-made liquid compost (thistle, dock, comfrey and nettle compost tea) to gently wake up soil microbes and boost life underground — even in the chill.
🍂 Finish off mulching — protecting our soil bare gardens with pea hay and our own mulch from frosty mornings to insulate root zones, and lock in the rain moisture.
🌾 Feeding our soil with organic matter like our own compost, alpaca manure, and leaf litter — everything our future seedlings will need to thrive.
🪱 Creating warm worm zones — to tuck food scraps into trenches or install a worm tower under mulch. I also use wood rounds as stepping stones that keep worms active in those cozy spots!
🧰 Refreshing my tools — sharpening secateurs, cleaning blades, and a sand & oil of those old wooden handles. I’ve treated mine to a rub of linseed oil — my hands (and those handles) will thank us come mid-season.
📋 Planning my planting layout and starting seeds indoors — spring is coming, and prep now means less stress later 🌼
💚 The soil might be cold, but life is stirring — help it along, and your garden will reward you.
