Back in 2017 when I joined Instagram, growth was steady and easy on this platform. But that changed sometime around 5 years ago, and my account stopped growing while I watched others race ahead of me in terms of follower count and engagement. This used to slightly bother me, but I came to terms with it long ago and now I’m actually grateful my account has stayed ‘micro’.
Here are a few reasons why I’m glad I’ve never cracked the 10k mark:
1️⃣ It’s the best of both worlds
Instagram has always been a creative outlet and escape from the daily grind for me. I have a regular 9-5 job (which I enjoy, and it pays the bills), and having a smaller account means I get to enjoy a steady income while also creating content. It also means that if I have lots of stuff going on in ‘real life’, I can take a break from IG for however long I need to, and pick it back up again when I’m ready.
2️⃣ My integrity is intact
Not having to rely on content creation for an income means I don’t feel pressured to do anything I don’t want to or that makes me uncomfortable. Hustling for brand deals? No thank you. Daily mirror selfies? Nope. Promoting products I’d never buy or use in a million years? Absolutely not. Rage baiting/farming for engagement? Hell no.
3️⃣ I still get excited about working with brands
As above, I don’t like to self-promote or hustle for brand deals, so whenever a brand I like reaches out to me I still get genuinely excited about creating content for them. You won’t see a lot of sponsored content on my page, but I also do a little bit of UGC (user generated content) creation for brands so you might see my home (and sometimes my hands) pop up in random places on the internet 😂
4️⃣ I’ve never encountered a troll
Having a reel or post go viral is the dream for many creators, but from what I’ve seen ending up on the wrong side of Instagram can have majorly negative effects on people’s mental health and the joy they get from creating content. In my 7+ years on IG, I can honestly say I’ve never had a mean comment or creepy man sliding into my DMs, and that’s the way I like it.
