Last week our team visited the nearly complete Nurse Maude Palliative Care unit here in Christchurch.

It was incredibly impressive to see making great progress on some of the finer details, and after nearly 12 years in our office, for many it is a joy to see it so close to the finish line.

We can’t wait to welcome the Nurse Maude team and Whanau into the space in the very near future!

Mataukareao, Dunedin.

Working closely with we are proud to have designed this 5 green star medical hub in the heart of Dunedin Central. Serving a variety of medical and government tenants, this 6 level building brings a wealth of high tech facilities along with a grounded story and thoughtful integration.

The name Mataukareao, gifted to the building honours its heritage as a landing place for waka at what is now Hanover street. Kareao is a supplejack and Matau a hook, the area then being referred to as Mataukareao.

Settling in to the new year we wanted to reminisce on the year that was 2025, some exciting projects completing and some incredible milestones for the team at S&R!

- .housetrustnz pod was released to the public and has gained significant community funding to progress, landscape architecture by the wonderful .landscape.studio

- The Punangairi Visitor Centre received some incredible accolades

- The completion of latest sauna building continues our partnership with this beautiful slice of paradise

- Motueka High School’s new teaching block, designed in partnership with our friends at is complete and welcoming students

- Tabak House received an enduring architecture award!

- Dunedin’s newest commercial space is complete and tenants are soon to move in!

2026 brings exciting things, with many projects already on site and many more still in the works 👀

Honouring the past and protecting for the future.

Ballantyne house at Medbury school has stood for nearly a century, over the years received many additions and alterations. We undertook a mammoth upgrade and conservation project to restore it to its glory, whilst ensuring that’s its internals meet the needs of the school moving forward.

We hope to see this beautiful building still standing proud in the next century.

Reinforcing its relevance over 40 years later, Tabak house won a National Award for Enduring Architecture. As one of the first projects to come out of the Sheppard & Rout office, Tabak house will always hold a special place in our hearts.

We would like to thank Hank Tabak for placing his trust in us all those years ago and to Philip King and Sarah Ayton for their custodianship of the property in its recent years, ensuring it will live long into the next 40 years!
