A circa 1920s icon undergoes a subtle and refined transformation. By reimagining the floor plan, consolidating lost space and adding a tasteful small extension, we’ve curated a harmonious blend of spaces within the existing arts and crafts character.

Huge thanks to the owners for embracing our ideas and vision, and to the entire team for their superb craftsmanship, dedication, and passion invested in this beautifully executed renovation.

A classic Christchurch villa gets a modern update

Our main focus is streamlining the adhoc social spaces, opening up the connection to the courtyard garden, and introducing a new guest studio to the underutilised garage space.

Creating a sense of connection and utility to the revived space we’re excited by the transformation potential.

Currently in early design phase, we'll share more updates as we progress through this considered renovation.

1:100 Maquette

This study model was created to help explore how the different cabin elements — living, utility and shelter — might be arranged across the site.

Working at 1:100 scale allows us to test multiple configurations, review sightlines, and understand how each building relates to the landscape — and to one another.

We’ve been using these scaled “building blocks” together with the client on site to evaluate layout options, views, privacy, and overall site potential in real time.

Mirrored and flipped versions were also produced so every possible arrangement can be fully considered before locking in the final layout.

A huge thank you to all the wonderful people we’ve had the pleasure of connecting with this year.

We’ve been incredibly fortunate to work on some amazing projects with equally amazing clients, and next year is shaping up to be more of the same — if not better.

And of course, a massive shout-out to the team behind BCD. They are genuinely invaluable — the kind of people who quietly (and sometimes not so quietly) keep everything moving, bring their talent and positivity into the studio, and consistently lift the standard of everything we produce. I feel incredibly lucky to have such a talented group alongside me every day.

We’re taking a bit of time out to recharge, so the studio will close on Friday 19 December and reopen on 19 January 2026.

Wishing you all a sun-soaked, relaxing holiday season filled with plenty of joy — and hopefully a few good memories made along the way.

S U M M I T S K I E S

A fresh concept for a new cabin project in Twizel — a little “camp-site meets base-camp”, where each cabin is purpose-built, utilitarian, and unapologetically functional.

The Main Cabin anchors the cluster, housing the core accommodation: lounge, bedroom, bathroom and laundry, all accessed via a sheltered crevasse between the utility pod and the main structure.

The Utility Pod does the heavy lifting — coat storage, drying racks, hot-water system, solar gear, e-bikes, car charging, wood storage and backup power. Rough, honest, hardworking.

And finally, the Shelter: a year-round outbuilding designed for everything from lazy summer evenings around the fire to snow-laden cold plunges beneath the canopy shower. Fire pit included, naturally.

An outdoor hot tub settles into angular, gabion-lined walls, bedding the entire composition into the foothills of the Ben Ohau Range.

More to come.

Midway progress shots from our Sumner renovation — and the team at .construction.nz are absolutely nailing it.

The original layout had the kitchen tucked away at one end, with a central foyer/walk-through zone acting as an underused dumping ground and breaking up any chance of connection. We’ve reimagined the heart of the home — opening up the dining area, relocating the kitchen, adding a new walk through pantry, adding a study and master suite, and even managing to squeeze a new bathroom neatly under the stairs.

A few clever moves in the plan have completely unlocked the flow — creating stronger spatial connections and a far more cohesive, natural layout that makes every square metre count.

More to come soon 👀

Progress shots from The Burrows — the latest addition to the Ururangi development in Twizel, also home to the award-winning Skylark Cabin.

Set beneath the dramatic silhouette of the Ben Ohau Range, this boutique retreat explores the idea of being grounded — both in form and experience. Nestled into the land, The Burrows frames focused views of the surrounding landscape, offering a distinctive and immersive take on luxury cabin living.

Clad in a camouflage of green-stained larch rainscreen, with black cork accent panels and Corten steel apertures — we can’t wait to see this one fully realised.

Concept renders of our proposed design for a luxury cabin project set in the shadow of Ben Ohau range, Twizel.
Curated around the ethos of Kapehu Whetū — the Māori celestial compass — this project is shaped to align with the rhythms of land and sky within the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve.

A dedicated ‘Star Nest’ observatory forms one of several features offering a unique way to engage with the night sky.
