overper cent;ResearchEver wondered what your heating really costs, long after the heater is installed?

The sticker price of a heater can be misleading. The true cost shows up over the years you run it, and that is where the picture changes. A research from Rewiring Aotearoa compared five common ways to heat a Kiwi home over 15 years, including purchase, installation and energy bills.

The result is clear. An electric heat pump comes in cheapest overall at around $10,815 over its life, while gas heating climbs to about $20,608 and LPG to roughly $26,396. The reason is efficiency. A heat pump does not create heat, it moves it, running at about 350 percent efficiency, so it costs roughly three times less to run than gas.

Cheaper upfront options can quietly cost you thousands more across the years. A heat pump strikes the best balance: a moderate start, the lowest running cost, and the lowest lifetime cost of the lot.

Hot showers without the bill shock. That is the quiet promise of a hot water heat pump.

Heating water makes up around a third of a typical power bill, so it is one of the easiest places to find real savings. A hot water heat pump uses about a third of the energy of a standard electric cylinder, and Gen Less estimates the average household could save around $284 a year. With nearly half of Kiwi homes running cylinders over 10 years old, it is worth knowing your options before yours gives out in the middle of a Canterbury cold snap.

If your cylinder is getting on, we are always happy to talk it through and help you find the right fit for your home. Book your free assessment with our team.

Did you know the Winter Energy Payment is back? From 1 May to 1 October, eligible Kiwi households receive a little extra help with their power bills, and it lands automatically with no application needed.

A top-up helps with the bill, but how you heat your home decides the bill. Hydronic underfloor heating turns your floor slab into gentle, even warmth from the ground up, with running costs of around $1.12 to $2.20 per square metre. Pair it with a hot water heat pump and you can save up to 75 percent on your hot water, too (source: Rewiring Aotearoa).

Your hot water cylinder might be the most affordable battery you will ever own.

RNZ reports that households with solar can use their electric hot water cylinder as low-cost energy storage, heating water during daylight hours rather than spending thousands on a home battery, with conservative estimates putting the savings at around $1,000 a year. Our 2in1 heat pump hot water cylinder takes that idea even further. It integrates directly with solar PV and lets you schedule up to three heating periods a day from your phone, so the sun does the heavy lifting while your power bill takes a break.

Does your Winter Energy Payment seem to stretch a little less each year?

You are not imagining it. As power prices keep climbing, that helpful top-up buys less warmth than it used to, and nearly a third of New Zealand households now feel the squeeze of staying warm. If your home runs on gas or diesel, there is a cheaper way to keep warm. Converting your gas or diesel system to an efficient heat pump for your hydronic underfloor heating means gentle, even warmth from the ground up, often at a fraction of the running cost.

If your home still runs on gas, here is something worth knowing.

This week the government announced it is helping businesses move off gas for good, against a backdrop of New Zealand's gas reserves falling 23 per cent in a single year and 12 of the country's 17 working gas fields expected to close within a decade. For families, that points to one thing: gas is likely to keep getting scarcer and pricier, while efficient heat pump heating and hot water just keep getting more affordable to run. Thinking about future-proofing your Canterbury home before next winter? Talk to us about switching your gas or LPG hot water and heating to an efficient R290 heat pump unit.

Are your power and gas bills creeping up each winter?

Independent research compared 13 different home heating systems and found that an air-to-water heat pump paired with rooftop solar delivered the best long-term value, with around 6% lower lifecycle cost and 17% less environmental impact than a modern gas boiler. A traditional gas or diesel boiler uses roughly 8,500 to 12,000 kWh a year, while a heat pump system uses just 2,100 to 3,300 kWh. With rooftop solar generating around 11,800 kWh on top of that, it adds up to a real difference for Canterbury households heading into another cold season.

Power bills are on the rise across New Zealand, but your hot water costs do not have to follow. The Energy Networks Association confirms that heat pumps are three to four times more efficient than gas alternatives, and our 2-in-1 hot water heat pump puts that efficiency to work for Canterbury households, cutting hot water running costs by up to 75%. For a family of four, that can translate to around $900 saved every year on hot water alone. Find out if it is right for your home at warmth.nz or call 0800 477 778.
