We were delighted to attend the Canterbury Architecture Awards on Thursday night, where The Red Cottage was a winner in the Housing — Alterations and Additions category.

The jury described it as "a thoughtful renovation of a much-loved home, designed to support its owners as they age in place — sensitive and carefully resolved, bringing greater clarity, comfort, and long-term usability to a cherished family home."

We were honoured to attend the Nelson and Marlborough Architecture Awards last Friday, where Tata Beach House was a winner in the Housing category.

This is a very special project for us, as it was John Chaplin’s final project before retiring from Chaplin Crooks Architects. It was wonderful to be able to share this moment with John’s family and reflect on his long contribution to the practice through a project that meant so much to him.

Thanks to the awards jury and Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects.

Walnut Cottage | Waitaki Valley

Autumn is a good time to revisit a project — and these photos of Walnut Cottage are a reminder of why.

When we were last there for Grand Designs filming, the build had only just been completed in time for the cameras to arrive. This time the paint was dry, the landscaping had settled in, and the autumn colours were doing their thing. Even better, it was lovely to reconnect with our clients and see the house not just looking good, but being properly lived in and enjoyed.

The Red Cottage | Redcliffs
From the street it keeps its familiar character. Inside, careful interventions have quietly lifted the home – improving light, ease of movement and the quality of spaces for peaceful long-term living.

Tata Beach House | Golden Bay

We’re honoured to have Tata Beach House shortlisted in the 2026 Nelson & Marlborough Architecture Awards.

This project is particularly special for our practice, as it was the final house designed by our founding director John Chaplin before retiring from Chaplin Crooks Architects.

Thank you to Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects.

We are deeply saddened to acknowledge the passing of our founding director John Chaplin, who retired from our practice back in 2018. For over 50 years, John’s dedication as a designer, advocate and mentor shaped our industry and inspired countless others. From his beginnings as a draughting cadet at the Ministry of Works, to co-principal of Chaplin Crooks Architects, he championed collegiality, nurtured young talent, and always placed people at the heart of his work.

John was not only a visionary professional but also a devoted family man who cherished life to the full. His legacy will endure, and he will be sorely missed.

During a recent farmhouse renovation in North Otago, we uncovered something remarkable—graffiti etched into the hidden back face of Oamaru stone cladding, untouched for over 75 years. Among the markings, we found sketches of horses and tallies, hinting at the days when hunters took shelter in these lodgings.
