Your home should be the place you come to decompress. Not the place where the traffic, the neighbours, and the noise from outside follows you inside.

Single-glazed windows offer almost no sound insulation.

Whatever is happening outside is effectively happening in your room. If you live near a main road, a school, or a busy street, you hear that noise every evening you're trying to wind down, every morning you're trying to sleep in, and every time you're working from home and need to think.

Thermoglaz offers sound-reducing glass as part of our double-glazing range. By using panes of different thicknesses within the unit, the glass disrupts sound frequencies rather than transmitting them.

Most people come to us for warmth. They end up equally happy about the silence.

Most people assume double glazing is just two panes of glass stuck together. It's a bit more interesting than that and the difference is why it works so well.

Between the two panes is argon gas, not air. Argon is denser than air, which makes it significantly harder for heat to escape outward or cold to push inward. The total unit is 20 to 24mm thick - compared to the 3 to 5mm of a single pane.

Thermoglaz also uses thermally broken spacer bars, which eliminate the cold bridge at the edge of the unit where most standard double glazing loses performance.

The result: heat stays in your home instead of disappearing through the glass. Your heating actually works. Your rooms hold their temperature. And your power bill reflects it.

Double glazing isn't a mandatory requirement under New Zealand's Healthy Homes Standards. But if you're a landlord working to meet the thermal, heating, and moisture control requirements, it's one of the most effective ways to get there.

Single-glazed windows are a significant source of heat loss in rental properties. They contribute directly to the cold, damp conditions the Standards were designed to address. Upgrading to double glazing helps meet multiple requirements at once - reducing heat loss, lowering the heating load, and reducing condensation, particularly in aluminium-framed properties.

Thermoglaz retrofits double glazing into existing frames across Christchurch rental properties. No full window replacement required in most cases, and the job is typically completed within a few days with minimal disruption to tenants.

Whether you own one investment property or several, it's worth understanding what double glazing could do for your compliance position - and your tenants' experience over winter.

"Is double glazing worth it?" It's one of the most searched questions about double glazing in New Zealand.

For most Christchurch homeowners with single-glazed windows, spending every winter wiping down condensation, running the heating constantly, and avoiding the coldest rooms in the house… the answer is yes. The gap between where you are and where you could be is significant.

Significantly reduced condensation. Rooms that hold their temperature overnight. A heating system that isn't fighting cold glass every hour it's running. Less moisture, less mould, less of the damp heaviness that makes a winter feel worse than it should.

What most people don't factor in is what single glazing is already costing them. Power bills running higher than they should. The heating working overtime against cold glass. Another winter of the same.

Double glazing pays for itself over time, and with finance options available, you don't need to have the full amount saved before you can move forward, so you can have a warmer home this winter and spread the cost over time.

Condensation on single-glazed windows doesn't just sit on the glass. It pulls toward the timber frame and over time, that moisture can cause the timber to deteriorate.

If you love the character of your original timber windows, that's worth knowing.

Thermoglaz retrofits double glazed units into your existing timber frames. You keep the warmth, the grain, the character - without the ongoing moisture damage that comes from single glazing.

If you've ever walked into a friend's house in winter and thought "why does this feel so much warmer than mine" - it might come down to the windows.

It's not always the heating system. It's not always the insulation.

Sometimes it's simply that their glass isn't radiating cold into the room, their windows aren't dripping condensation every morning, and their heating isn't working overtime to compensate for heat disappearing through single-glazed panes.

Double glazing isn't a new build luxury. It retrofits into most existing timber and aluminium frames - the same windows you already have, significantly better performing.

If your home has never quite felt as warm as it should, it's worth finding out why.

Most people think condensation is just annoying.

You grab the squeegee, wipe it down and get on with your day… same as every other winter morning.

But here's what's actually happening. When warm air inside your home hits a cold single glazed window, it drops below dew point and turns to water on the glass. That moisture sits on your frames and sills all day. It grows mould. The mould releases spores into the air your family breathes every night.

It's not a cleaning problem. It's a cold glass problem.

Double glazing works by creating a sealed air gap between two panes of glass. That gap insulates the inner pane, so it stays closer to room temperature, condensation stops forming, and the moisture problem disappears at the source.

No more morning wipe downs. No more mould on the frames. No more cold air radiating off the glass.

Every year, the same thing happens. People feel the cold in May, think about calling and don't get around to it until June. By then the worst of winter has already arrived and the booking queue has already grown.

Here's the reality of how it works: from the time you book, a retrofit installation is typically 6-8 weeks out. In winter, that can extend to 10-12 weeks. That means if you're calling in May, you're looking at being sorted before the coldest part of winter. If you wait until June or July, you're booking yourself into the back half of winter or missing it altogether.

The process itself is straightforward. Free quote, we assess your home, you get a price within 24 hours and we lock in your installation date. The hard part is just making the call before everyone else does.

Same frames. Completely different home.

This Christchurch homeowner had lived with condensation, mould on the frames and cold rooms every winter for years. They assumed fixing it meant ripping out the whole window - expensive, disruptive, not worth it.

It wasn't like that at all.

Thermoglaz removes the existing single glazed panes from your timber frames and installs new high performance double glazed units in their place. Your frames stay exactly as they are. The job is done in as little as a few days.

And from that next cold morning? A noticeable difference. Significantly less condensation on the glass. Warmer rooms. Less of that chill radiating off the windows first thing in the morning. For many homeowners, it's the kind of change they wish they'd made years earlier.

If you've been putting this off because you thought it was a bigger job than it is... it isn't. One free quote is all it takes to find out what's possible for your home.
