Operation Patiki

Operation Patiki Ma wai ra e Taurima

If not we then who?

Our plan is based around the following priorities of Ngāti Hori in freshwater:
• Achieving sufficient water flow
• Improving water quality
• Protection and restoration of traditional riparian vegetation
• Protection and restoration of fish and fish habitat
These priorities are based on Ngāti Hori’s values in the Karamu stream

On Saturday we were privileged to come together at the marae alongside the Raupare River and Te Awa Mokotuararo for a day of hands-on learning, connection, and whakawhanaungatanga.

Seeing our tamariki fully engaged in the activities, inspired by their surroundings, and building a genuine connection to the awa was a powerful reminder of why this kaupapa matters. The level of focus, curiosity, and pride they showed throughout the day was a true highlight and a clear win for our community.

So much learning happened naturally through doing — strengthening knowledge, deepening relationships, and nurturing kaitiakitanga for our waterways and whenua.

Ngā mihi nui to everyone who supported, participated, and helped make the day such a success. Big mihi to Cameron Ormsby as this day would not have happened otherwise. Together we are growing the next generation of guardians for our taiao. 💚

Whanau welcome to our wānanga.

Today marks the completion of the Farndon Road - Rock Wall Revetment project, closed this morning with a beautiful karakia whakamutunga.

We would like to acknowledge everyone who has supported this kaupapa:
• Te Piringa Hapū – especially Jenny Mauger and Patricia Nuku for your guidance and support in retrieving the mauri stone from Kuripapango.
• Department Of Conservation– especially Toronge Tepania Ashton, who helped us access the Kuripapango DOC site and made the process smooth.
• Cherrington Built - Jordan Cherrington for providing your digger services to retrieve the mauri stone from the headwaters.
• Hawke’s Bay Regional Council – for working closely alongside us throughout the project.
• Galbraith Earthmovers Limited– to the team who adapted to and upheld our cultural values every step of the way.

• also Aquaculture Environmental Ltd - Cam Ormsby for conducting the CIA on behalf of The Pātiki Team.

• Matua Bevan Taylor and Te Kaha Hawaikirangi – for leading this morning’s closing karakia.

Operation Pātiki will continue to regenerate and strengthen the mauri of the Awa, ensuring its wellbeing for our future mokopuna. Ko au te awa ko te awa ko au.

This morning, in karakia, the mauri stone was placed within the rockwall revetment.
Bestowed with the name Pāpango, it stands as a guardian of mauri — carrying the strength of Kuripapango, and binding the spirit of the awa with the people. With Jenny Apatu-Mauger
