Operation Patiki

Operation Patiki Ma wai ra e Taurima

If not we then who?

Our plan is based around the following priorities of Ngāti Hori in freshwater:
• Achieving sufficient water flow
• Improving water quality
• Protection and restoration of traditional riparian vegetation
• Protection and restoration of fish and fish habitat
These priorities are based on Ngāti Hori’s values in the Karamu stream

A huge mihi to everyone who came along on Saturday morning to help plant rākau. We really appreciated your time and your presence.

We had a few whanau send their apologies as there were Tangihanga taking place last week. We send our aroha, thoughts and condolences to each of those whanau.

We continued the mahi as best we could.

Kua whakaritea te rā! Our planting day is set.

Come along and join us for a morning of planting rakau at Te Pākiaka Maori Reserve. Bring your whānau, bring your friends, and come and plant a tree or two with us.

There’s something really special about being on the whenua early in the morning — the crisp frost, the calmness in the air, and the opportunity to come together and do something positive for our environment and for the generations to come.

You may notice a bit of activity down next to Pākiaka Urupā today, with the digger working on the whenua.

The team will be shaping and preparing the land, helping to create a beautiful space ready for our upcoming planting day. 🌱

It’s exciting to see the whenua slowly taking shape as we prepare to bring our community, whānau, schools and environmental groups together to plant rakau and care for this special place.

We’ll keep you updated as the mahi progresses and look forward to sharing more details about our planting day.

This morning, Tom and I met with Andrew and his team from the HBRC Works Group to begin preparing the grounds next to Pākiaka Urupā for this season’s rakau planting.

We’re looking forward to inviting our local community, schools, whānau and environmental groups to come together and help us with planting in August. 🌱

We’re working through the details now and hope to have a planting day confirmed by the end of this week. I’ll share the details here as soon as we have a plan in place.

If you, your school, group or organisation would be interested in joining us for a planting day, please get in touch with us here on the page. We’d love to hear from you and have as many of our community as possible involved.

A big mihi to everyone who has helped and supported us in getting to this point. We really appreciate you.

On Saturday we were privileged to come together at the marae alongside the Raupare River and Te Awa Mokotuararo for a day of hands-on learning, connection, and whakawhanaungatanga.

Seeing our tamariki fully engaged in the activities, inspired by their surroundings, and building a genuine connection to the awa was a powerful reminder of why this kaupapa matters. The level of focus, curiosity, and pride they showed throughout the day was a true highlight and a clear win for our community.

So much learning happened naturally through doing — strengthening knowledge, deepening relationships, and nurturing kaitiakitanga for our waterways and whenua.

Ngā mihi nui to everyone who supported, participated, and helped make the day such a success. Big mihi to Cameron Ormsby as this day would not have happened otherwise. Together we are growing the next generation of guardians for our taiao. 💚

Whanau welcome to our wānanga.
