"When architect Julian Mitchell was asked to design an addition to his late father David Mitchell’s first home, the result was destined to be personal. The design is a respectful evolution of the 1970s original that David designed — one that enhances its function while preserving its architectural spirit. Working with a compact central-city site presented logistical and technical hurdles from the outset.... The resulting two-storey ‘bathroom tower’ is a triumph of craft and planning. The new vertical addition sits gently alongside the existing structure, clad in timber weatherboards that mirror its materiality..."

Congratulations to builders Hybrid and our clients who were awarded Gold at the 2025 Master Builders House of the Year Awards on the weekend. It was great to work with the team to create the Gunson Tower together.

We have just finished screening all 6 episodes of David Mitchell’s 1984 TV series “The Elegant Shed” at Devonport’s The Vic Theatre, as part of the “Urban Adaptations – Te Hau Kapua Mƍ Apƍpƍ / Devonport Tomorrow” exhibition of Julie Stout’s Auckland Uni 4th Year Master of Architecture student work. It was great to gather together and enjoy the show in the cinema! đŸŽ„

"Described as reinterpreting ‘the Oxbridge model of tertiary buildings in a delightfully informal and contemporary South Pacific way’, it won a Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects award for Public Architecture in 2005.⁠

“The blatant stupidity of this demolition is beyond belief,” says Kerry Francis, architect and lecturer at Unitec Institute of Technology Te Whare Wānanga o Wairaka, who has witnessed its demise.⁠

“It was a building of significant architectural quality that could easily have been re-used for a number of different functions. In a time of climate threat, the demolition of a fine and very useful piece of architecture seems at best reckless.”⁠

The building was sold to the crown to offset debt, says Kerry, and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development brought in the demolition crew last month.⁠"
