We are a specialist native New Zealand plant nursery based in Dunedin and have been operating for about 30 years. Our aim is to grow a wide range of high quality natives including ferns, ground cover plants, shelter and screening shrubs and large growing specimen or forest trees. Our plants are grown in Dunedin for Otago conditions and include plants for very exposed coastal sites, stunning archit

ectural plants for the home garden, plants to encourage native birds such as tui, bellbirds and kereru, plants for forest or wetland revegetation projects and species that will survive the climatic extremes of Central Otago. Our staff have a wealth of native plant knowledge and can help you choose the right plants for any planting project, large or small.

At Ribbonwood Nurseries, we're gradually moving from plant bags to reusable plastic pots.

These pots are more durable and can be used again and again. Rather than sending pots to landfill after a single use, we're encouraging customers to return them to us.

Returned pots are cleaned, sterilised, and reused in our nursery, helping to reduce waste and lessen our environmental impact.

If you've purchased plants from us, please consider bringing your empty pots back on your next visit.

Metrosideros carminea (Carmine Rātā) is a stunning native climber known for its vibrant crimson flowers.
Best planted in a free-draining soil with plenty of organic matter, it enjoys a sunny position once established, although its roots appreciate cool, moist conditions. The juvenile plants are ideal for training up walls, fences, or pergolas, where it can put on a spectacular floral display and the adult plants form a lovely wee shrub.
