I love a challenge and creating a landscaped area that ticked all the boxes on this small steep section provided exactly that, with our clients thrilled by the end results.
They wanted to make good use of the views overlooking Kaka Point towards the Nugget Point lighthouse but there was only 271m2 of space for landscaping.
Not deterred, we turned negatives into positives, finding secret vistas and creating new garden spaces. We worked within the constraints of difficult access to the property’s most stunning views and being overlooked by the neighbouring house.
On our client’s wish-list were taking as much advantage of the sun as possible, easy access, space for a spa pool and washing line, and an easy-care, low maintenance garden.
The design includes a series of steps up around the house to the deck. From there steps connect to the top of the section where the spa pool will sit. Two more sitting and viewing spaces were created to make the most of the views.
The driveway includes a curved garden leading to the parking area featuring low gabion baskets. These provide a strong visual barrier.
The garden was planted with local natives including two Podocarpus golden totara, coprosma rhamnoides, renga renga lilies, Chatham Island forget me not and dwarf flax Emerald Green. The plants will fill the garden, providing ground cover that will reduce weeds and maintenance.
Also used were red tussocks, Astelia nervosa ‘Mountain Flax’, our NZ icon plant Cyanthea dealbata “Silver Fern’, Pseudowintera colorata Horopito, Pittosporum ‘Stephens Island’, Melicytus lanceolatus, Myrsine australis, corokia, lancewoods and Sophora microphylla Southern Kowhai.
We created a home-away-from-home for our clients from where they can work remotely and enjoy the surrounding land and seascapes.
