While on the Citrus kick, this has been my kitchen and household cleaner for about 12 years.
Its the most eco friendly option, vinegar is deodorising, it cleans grease and is antibacterial … there are some surfaces it should not be used on, namely stone and polished wood.
The citrus also adds to the ability to cut through grease, plus leaves a pleasant scent.
Citrus peels, enough to fill a jar.
Fill with white vinegar.
Lid on, into a cool, dry cupboard.
After 2-3 weeks, pour off liquid, filtering out particles.
Pour into a spray bottle, about halfway.
Add water until full.
Spray and wipe as usual.
Any citrus peels will do, even a mix. Each add their unique fragrance; my favourites are mandarin, lime or grapefruit.

Small reminder for all those Citrus growers out here in South Taranaki.
Citrus do not ripen more once picked.
So if it has green in the skin it is not fully ripened and will be wasted. I leave all of my fruit on and only pick what is really ripe.
They last on the tree, so why waste fruit?
Also, this helps with purchasing fruits from the supermarket and stalls … don’t buy green citrus, its not ripe, it will not be fully sweet and ready for eating.
Ripe fruit has even skin colour, all orange for mandarin, all yellow for limes and lemons, all orange for oranges & tangelo, golden for grapefruit.
Just because its in the shops does not mean they are ready on your trees, the mountain changes our season, I will not be eating from our trees for a few weeks yet.

EDIT As pointed out by someone wise, some Satsumas in the Supermarket can have a little green on the skin, but thats because they are grown in regions such as Hawkes Bay, Gisborne, Bay of Plenty or Kerikeri which get much warmer Summer temps than here.
Summer sun and heat are not equal so the sugars have not had the same conditions to be okay green.
Just be patient with your fruit for best results and don’t compare our growing conditions to other areas … we are cool mountain zone.

Kākābeak/Ngutukākā - Clianthus puniceus
Plants are 50cm plus
$8 each
A fast growing, hardy, evergreen shrub. Has pinkish-red, parrot beak-shaped flowers in spring and through into summer and attracts nectar-eating birds. Plant in either full sun or partial shade where soils are moist but free-draining. A light trim after flowering has finished helps maintain the shape.

Yesterday, Nick & Karyn had a 14 hour journey to Te Puna and back.
They were diverted from the gorge on the way up but got there in time for a convoy on the way back.
They picked up our Citrus order from Copperfield Nurseries … excellent quality plants as always.

$40 each or $70/2
