Great to connect with like-minded professionals at the newly opened .nz

We work across a wide range of industries throughout the Waikato, so it was valuable to discuss everything from the ever-changing RMA and land subdivision challenges to what’s actually happening on the ground across the region right now.

With the now in full swing, there’s a real shift in energy at the southern end of Victoria Street. The vibe was noticeable, and at times it almost felt like sitting in the Melbourne CBD on a balmy evening. A slightly more elevated vibe for Hamilton and great to see.

A big thank you to for sponsoring the evening, and to Sarah Wootton from Pragmatix Ltd and Helen Neilsen from Maltbys Limited for helping to bring it together once again.

Had a great at time at Mr Pickles last night! Met such a diverse group of women who all work in the construction sector in the Waikato/BOP. Really enjoyed our conversations and learning about everyone’s work in the region.

Special thanks to Helen Neilsen for organising such a valuable event and to Geoff Hayr for his generous sponsorship.

Looking forward to the next one!

Engaged by a creative Mount Maunganui family who adore the beach and needed extra space, our task was to design a studio in their backyard that not only served their expanding needs but also harmonised with its coastal setting.

Designed by Creative Director Sally Holdgate, this 41m2 studio features a versatile layout, including a large storage area, an open-plan space with a bed, desk, kitchenette, and bathroom.

Embracing a quintessential Kiwi design, we incorporated weatherboards and natural vertical shiplap timber to blend seamlessly with the existing dwelling on site. This modern yet classic approach ensures that the studio complements its coastal surroundings while providing functional, stylish space.

A special thank you to our clients consultants, builders and subcontractors for their contributions in this project:

Land Surveyor: Rural Urban Surveyors
Geotechnical & Civil Engineer: Tiaki Engineering Consultants Ltd
Slab Designer: Cresco Engineering
Electrician: Hiko Electrical Services

A Village of Connection: Enriching Lives in Rural Waikato

Designed by Founder & Creative Director Sally Holdgate, this village was conceived with the understanding that community is at the heart of a fulfilling life. Tailored specifically for people aged over 55, the village offers more than just homes — it provides a sanctuary where residents can truly belong. The shared community garden, pétanque court, and BBQ area are more than just amenities; they are spaces where stories are shared, friendships are forged, and a sense of belonging is cultivated.

The master planning includes 13 spacious, thoughtfully laid out 2-bedroom units that ensure accessibility and comfort. The varying roof heights and carefully considered façade details add visual interest and character to the village, enhancing its integration into the surrounding rural setting. Each home is designed to offer privacy while encouraging community interaction through open, inviting layouts.

A key feature is the public cycle and walkway, seamlessly integrating the village with the surrounding community and enhancing connectivity between the school, town centre, and nearby subdivisions. The careful selection of materials and contemporary finishes respects the rural context while providing modern, high-quality living spaces. Each unit has been crafted to be warm, healthy, and energy-efficient, ensuring a high standard of living.

What makes this project even more special is the collaborative spirit that brought it to life. Working closely with clients who were not only deeply experienced in the construction industry but also had a clear vision of what they wanted, this journey became one of shared dreams. Over time, these clients have become valued friends.

At its core, this project embodies the ethos of EA Architects Studio: creating spaces that enrich lives through thoughtful design and lasting relationships. It’s a place where architecture becomes more than just buildings; it becomes the foundation for a community that will thrive for years to come.

A special thank you to our client's consultants, builder, and subcontractors for their essential contributions in realising this vision.

✍🏼 Initial site plan showing the primary & secondary dwelling’s on a stunning rural Waikato lifestyle block with 360 degree views to Mt Pirongia and the Hakarimata Ranges.

Careful consideration has been given to creating shelter from the prevailing wind, whilst providing outdoor living area to capture the views.

Looking forward to seeing this one begin construction shortly.

Thank you to the Waikato Chamber of Commerce and HMS TRUST for putting on such an inspiring B4 event last night!

HMS Trust is doing incredible work in Hamilton, supporting refugees and migrants new to New Zealand by providing essential services like English language classes, medical care, driving lessons, and more. I was fortunate to tour their impressive new $4.3M community centre, which was entirely privately funded.

I was also thrilled to meet like-minded, passionate individuals dedicated to driving further positive change in our Waikato community!

Introducing Sally Holdgate, founder & creative director.

Sally answered a few questions for us:

How long have you been working in business / worked for this company?

I have been working as an architect for 17 years and started EA Architects Studio in Hamilton just 3 years ago.

How many people are in your team?

It’s just me! I hire architectural technicians as subcontractors when I have a high workload and work with many other consultants and builders on a regular basis. I have a strong relationship with this wider team to see quality projects delivered successfully.

Great working relationships with like minded people, clients and other industry professionals is key and also makes the job even more enjoyable!

What type of architect would you describe yourself as?

I am particularly interested in creative design, technical detailing and project management. I specialise in obtaining resource & building consents and have been running projects through all phases with high involvement designing, drafting & carrying out contract administration.

What do you love the most about Hamilton?

As a born and bred Hamiltonian, I love seeing the Hamilton CBD develop and to work with people who are also passionate about helping to make the necessary improvements. The Waikato region has so much potential and it’s a joy to see it being realised and to see so many talented people working here. Hamilton is changing a lot and for the better. There’s also a lovely community feel, which my husband and I think is great to be a part of.

What sets your business apart from other similar businesses?

I’m influenced by Australian architecture and design and think there’s so much that can be gleaned from others in the industry all around the world. No day is the same in this industry and most people in it see their job as a vocation, not just a job! I believe well designed buildings can bring about social change.
