We're incredibly proud to announce that Richard Mauriohooho FNZIA was recently awarded Fellowship of Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects – one of the profession's highest honours.
Richard has been with PAUA for 28 years. His architecture is rooted in place, people, and tikanga – a body of work that has earned the trust and respect of Waikato-Tainui communities, marae, and institutions alike. From the Cambridge Police Hub to the Whare Ako at Hamilton Boys' High School, his buildings carry cultural meaning embedded in their form, not just their surfaces.
Beyond the award-winning projects, Richard has spent years helping marae navigate funding, regulation, and planning, as an expression of genuine service to his community.
Ngā mihi nui, Richard. This recognition is richly deserved.

P**i Beach House, Completed 2010.

The clients approached PAUA with a confined site where the view of the beach was impeded by the house in front. The rooftop terrace, accessed by an exterior spiral staircase from the main living space, affords panoramic views of the sea and coast. This is every bit a kiwi bach, but with a real point of difference.

Rotokauri Hilltop House, Completed 2008.

It's that time of year that the autumn light casts wonderful shadows.

From the Jury Citation for this Rotokauri house:
"The bold form and sculptural simplicity of the building belies its intricate detail, an example of which is the way sunlight is diffused over the stained timber and glass facades. Internally, innovative use of grooved timber panels and spotlights filter light across adjacent walls...”

Hukanui Primary School's environmental elective students were intrinsically involved in the research, design decision-making and construction for this ground-breaking eco-classroom.

The PAUA team enjoyed their role ‘extension’, from designers to educators, helping the students to understand concepts like passive solar design and thermal mass, and to research issues like building orientation, life-cycle analysis, and building performance, and selecting construction methodologies and materials.

“For a new initiative such as our eco-classroom, it was imperative that we established clear avenues of communication at a range of levels. [PAUA Architects] made this possible through their sound organisation, written communication, and by encouraging all those involved to ask questions. The genuine care for the result of our project was always evident.”
Michelle White (Environmental Educator) and David Mossop (Former Principal)

Aotea Bach, Completed 2017.
NZIA Waikato Bay of Plenty Architecture Award 2019 - Residential. Jury Citation:
“Perched on an exquisite promontory, this holiday home skilfully manages to provide excellent views of a nearby historic pā and Aotea harbour while negotiating the constant demands of shelter from wind. To achieve this, three building forms have been carefully composed to create pleasant courtyards. Inside and out the house the careful detailing and natural material selections contribute to a relaxed and congenial ambience. This is a home that could - and should - be enjoyed all-year round.”

Pencarrow House, Tamahere, Completed 2019.

From the hilltop Pencarrow House at Tamahere, the rural views of Maungatautari and Pirongia across dairy paddocks are distinctly Waikato.

The true test of architecture comes when people use the space; that's when the real beauty is revealed.

PAUA Architects' mission is "to design remarkable environments that enrich lives every day". And while we often share beautiful, sweeping exterior shots, it's typically the smaller details and everyday use which delight clients in unexpected but meaningful ways.
