Quince trees are in and already fruiting!Chaenomeles, the Chinese Quince is an adaptable and hardy deciduous tree, performing well in all areas of New Zealand! Like most fruit trees, quinces grow and produce best in a location with full sun and free-draining soil – though they will tolerate part-shade and dry spots.
Quince are also a great source of dietary fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals and hold a very high concentration of vitamin C.
A perfect alternative to peach and plum trees, believed to bring good luck and prosperity to homes as branches are easy to force, and the buds open to beautiful, showy blossoms!

Geisha Girls, Duranta💜
An ornamental flowering shrub that belongs to the Verbena family.
These are fast growing subtropical with attractive cascading branches.
They smother themselves with arching sprays of pretty deep mauve blooms.
Happiest in a sunny spot, but can tolerate partly shaded conditions as well, to achieve perfect foliage colour and for producing flowers.
They prefer soil that is well drained. Water them every 2-3 days once they get established.
Prune reasonably hard, as Duranta are vigorous and protect from harsh frost!

Heading away for the long weekend?
Well heads-up, we're also only days away from a heatwave in Hawke's Bay!
Here's a how to guide, to stop your garden from drying out!

The best way to protect your garden from drying out is by giving it a deep soak in the days leading up, then mulching it thickly with compost ($7.99 per 40litres), pea hay ($5 bags) mulch and feed ($21.99 per bag), bark or wood chips, (also available in store)!
Soak hoses on timers are good for newly planted trees and shrubs that haven't had time to get well established.
Water-filled and upturned soft drink bottles with a hole drilled in the lid and poked into soil around plants are cheaper albeit less attractive (and short term) option.
On slopes, creating low earth dams on the downhill side of young plants will help water retention.
Plants in pots are best shifted to the south side of houses, which is always cooler.
Indoor plants can be set in the bath, basin or sinks with about 10cm of water.
Grouping them closely together will also help moisture levels high. Lastly, water crystals are also a fantastic product to use and available in store!
Stay hydrated fans✌

Jeepers Creepers!!
We've been restocked in climbers and these are a fantastic way to disguise an unattractive wall or fence, by planting a fast growing vine up it.
Try anything from sweet pea, scarlet runners, bouganvillea, Mandeville, hops, banksia and more.
Just remember most climbers will need the likes of some string, wire netting or trellis to give them a leg up!

Fejoa trees are in flower and these make a superb tree to own!
A superfood, filled with antioxidant-rich vitamin C, as well as B vitamins, vitamin E, and vitamin K.
Feijoas also have plenty of great minerals in them, including calcium and magnesium.
A little heads up, some are self-pollinating, and some are not, so if they're not, you'll need another tree to pollinate the two.
If you have a few feijoa trees already, which are not really fruiting (or not fruiting at all) by buying another named variety, this works out to be a good fruiting strategy.
If you are planting to attract bees or repel insect pests.. some suggestions for feijoas are borage, comfrey, marigold, chives, calendula (seasonal).. (All available in our nursery also).
Make sure you provide good drainage for them and add blood and bone when planting and they will be very happy and reward you for it!
We've many varieties in store, so ask for yours today!

Uh oh! More rain!!
Here's some Handy Hints for making the most out your garden and veg and still keep you sane, in this wet weather!
As tomatoes ripen, reduce watering (if you can) and remove the lower leaves to let more sun on the fruit. We're almost in Feb and the season will nearly be over by March, so by removing many of the leaves, this will not hurt the fruit, leaving tomatoes to ripen on the plant.. making them tastier and sweeter.😋🍅
Green tomatoes will ripen inside on a sunny windowsill or in a brown paper bag with other fruit, such as apples🍎 that give off ethylene gas, (a ripening agent).
OR cook👩🏼‍🍳 them green, as in fried green tomatoes, which are first coated in a cornmeal-based batter.
While you're at it, make the most of your beautiful Hydrangeas.
By pruning back larger leaves, this exposes buds to open up again, flower and see the sun!
