🌼 Daffodil Day NZ 💛

Today is Daffodil Day — a day to come together and support the Cancer Society of New Zealand and the incredible work they do supporting people affected by cancer, funding research, and helping create a cancer-free future.

Here at Landscape Essentials, we’re surrounded by signs of spring, and few flowers herald its arrival quite like the cheerful daffodil. 🌼💛

So today, we’re taking a moment to celebrate the simple things that bring colour and hope after winter — and to encourage everyone to get behind Daffodil Day if you can https://www.daffodilday.org.nz/

Every donation, big or small, helps make a difference. 💛

🌱 Got empty plant pots? We’d love them back! ♻️

There’s been lots of winter planting happening, and we’re already starting to see plenty of empty pots making their way back to us. This is just one of bags full we’ve collected from planting projects! 🙌

As we head into our busy potting season, we’d love to get those pots back so we can reuse them and give them another life rather than sending them to waste.

If you’ve got a stack of empty nursery pots taking up space in the shed, bring them in! 🌿

📍 Drop them into our pot return bin out the front anytime for after-hours drop-offs, or bring them in during our open hours and we’ll happily help you unload.

Plant → Return → Reuse → Plant again. 🌱♻️

🌱 From nursery to the hills – 5,000+ Mānuka plants on the move!

What a fantastic few days for the Lake Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust - Mānuka project!

This project has been several years in the making, beginning back in 2023 with the goal of establishing a safe bird corridor from the sanctuary into neighbouring predator-controlled areas. Mānuka seed for this project was collected and supplied by the Rotokare team, ensuring the plants were grown from local provenance seed well suited to the site’s unique ecological area. These plants are the first step in a long-term restoration project, providing a nursery crop for future enrichment plantings.

The last few days have been a great example of what can be achieved when everyone pitches in.

A huge thank you to Eltham Building Supplies for helping us with the loading out of more than 5,000 plants, and to the Agribusiness team from ANZ Bank, who braved the cold, miserable weather to help us get the plants packed and ready to go.

Then it was over to Beck’s Helicopters to do the heavy lifting, transporting the bales up into the hills ready for planting. 🚁🌿

And finally, the plants made it into the ground, with a fantastic group of volunteers helping with the planting over the weekend.

There has been a huge amount of planning, growing, organising, lifting, flying and planting behind these 5,000+ plants. It’s pretty special to see a project that started with seed collected by Rotokare back in 2023 now taking root in the landscape.

A massive thank you to everyone who has played a part in getting these Mānuka from our nursery to the hills. 💚

Yesterday was a big day at the nursery as we loaded out 5,000+ Mānuka plants destined for a planting nearby Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust

This project has been several years in the making, with the goal of establishing a safe bird corridor from the sanctuary into neighbouring predator-controlled areas. Mānuka seed for this project was collected and supplied by the Lake Rotokare team, ensuring the plants were grown from local provenance seed that is well suited to the site's unique ecological area. These plants are the first step in a long-term restoration project, providing a nursery crop for future enrichment plantings

A huge thank you to the local Agribusiness team from ANZ Bank, who braved yesterday's cold, miserable weather, rolled up their sleeves, and spent the day alongside us. Their help packing more than 5,000 plants into helicopter bales was greatly appreciated and ensured everything is ready for transport later this week.

Projects like this don't happen overnight. They take years of planning, growing, coordinating, and teamwork between everyone involved. It's incredibly rewarding to see all that effort come together and know these plants will play an important role in strengthening native biodiversity and expanding habitat for our precious wildlife.

Want to be part of the next step? 🌱

Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust is looking for able body volunteers to help plant these Mānuka this Sunday 9th August, from 9am (Weather contingency day will be the following Sunday 16th). If you'd like to get involved in this fantastic restoration project, please RSVP to Lorella so they have an idea of numbers for catering.

We'd love to see a great turnout for this special community planting day!

🌸 1st of August means one thing at Landscape Essentials... it's time to check our 'Felix Jury' Cherry tree! 🌸

Every year we use this tree as our indicator for spring and sap movement. After years of trial and error, we've learnt that once this tree starts showing colour, our cutting strike rates begin to drop dramatically.

This year it's around 2 weeks ahead of where it was at the same time last year! 🌿

Luckily for us, we wrapped up all of our winter cuttings last week, so it's great timing. Now it's exciting to see the first signs that spring isn't too far away.

It's always amazing how nature keeps us on our toes—every season is a little different, and our trusty 'Felix Jury' never fails to remind us that spring is on its way. 🌸🌱

Our Griselinia 'Broadway Mint' has officially sold out! 🌿

It's been an incredibly busy winter planting season, and thanks to the fantastic support from our customers, we've now sold out of our entire crop. It's been a few years since we've been able to say that!

Unfortunately, there won't be any more Griselinia Broadway Mint available until our next crop is ready, which we expect to be around January 2027.

If you're planning a hedge or landscaping project before then, we'd be happy to recommend some great alternative options to suit your needs 🌱
