Heliportable Drilling & Site Investigation Specialists, South Island, New Zealand
Helidrill is owned and operated by well known and respected Kiwi driller, Grant Brotherston who has had over 30 years’ experience in the drilling industry.
Helidrill prides itself on being a small owner operated business that puts the client’s needs first. Grant is hard working and safety conscious, meaning that not only does his client’s job get completed in a timely manner, he also ensures the operation is safe for visitors to the site and staff, resulting in no downtime due to accidents or safety issues. Regular maintenance and upkeep of the equipment also keeps disruption to a minimum, for his clients.
Grant has an enviable track record as a driller - his work commonly results in above average core recovery for his clients.
It was Grant’s love of Fiordland that got him thinking there was a need for a heli-portable drilling service in the South Pacific. He has developed a fleet of rigs that are able to be assembled and disassembled within hours. Entire rigs are boxed up and dropped into remote locations or narrow spaces.
This simple, agile innovation has meant Helidrill’s portable rigs have been dropped to drill in some of the most inhospitable locations in the South Pacific.
“Working a rig with a wide open view of the planet, pulling core for a client - that’s a 9 out of 10 in terms of job satisfaction for me, easy.”
Grant has been involved in some of South Pacific’s most ambitious and important research projects over the 15 years. Core samples have been commissioned from Antarctica, Raoul Island and under Lake Ōhau to help scientific understanding of global warming and climate change, seismicity and tsunami.
“It’s the biggest privilege to work on scientific stuff - the core is precious and you treat it with kid gloves. Rather than a sample, I think of it being like a witness or informant that’s waiting to be interviewed.”

In 2006, he led the drilling team on the Andrill project in Antarctica that were the first to successfully drill the 1200 metre deep holes into the “lowest Miocene to Paleogene sediments beneath the Ross Ice Shelf to recover the targeted strata to provide a new, high-quality stratigraphic record from a period when atmospheric CO2 levels were comparable to those projected to the next century”.
