💚 Myoga Ginger Plants 💚

Myoga Ginger (Zingiber mioga) isn't grown for it's roots, like the standard ginger we see usually see, but for the new shoots and flower buds, making it a handy ginger alternative that is growing most of the year.

It tastes similiar to regular ginger root, and is considered a delicacy, with a crunchy texture.

Myoga is very nutritious: it contains high levels of antioxidants, potassium, manganese, copper, zinc, magnesium, iron, and dietary fiber, as well as an essential oil that stimulates the cerebral cortex (for increased memory) and increases appetite. Also B vitamins, vitamin K and vitamin C!

Potassium can help eliminate sodium from the body and lower blood pressure, improves blood flow and is effective in relieving swelling.

Potassium is best in uncooked foods, so eating Myoga raw in salads and pickled is a great way to ensure a rich source of potassium.

Other health benefits are said to be an increased memory, weight reduction, less insulin resistance, easing digestion, improving sleep, and increasing immunity.

Traditionally it has been used to also treat colds and flu and heat stroke. The reddish purple pigment in myoga is said to help maintain eye health and prevent cancer.

The flower shoots start appearing in summer, but aim to get the shoots before they flower too much if possible, to get the tender buds.

Myoga can be eaten raw or cooked: it is often used as a garnish for Miso soup, in salad, deep fried, stir fries, steamed rice or skewered with meat and pan fried.

It is a great plant for a food forest!

Do you use Myoga any other way? I'd love to hear below please :-D
