Winter's tough on our feathered friends, and food can be scarce, but with a little help from us gardeners, we can turn our backyards into bird havens.

Here's a fun, low-cost way to get involved: grab an old toilet roll, spread a bit of peanut butter around it, then roll it in Topflite Wild Bird Seed Mix. Thread some string through, hang it in a tree or shrub, an instant homemade bird feeder!

You'll be amazed how quickly silvereyes, waxeyes, finches and sparrows swoop in for a snack. It's such a joy to watch - and perfect for getting the kids involved too.

Let's look after the birds that bring life, colour and music to our gardens, they need us right now. Shop our NZ-grown wild bird seed, nectar and feeding sets on our website today. www.kingsseeds.co.nz

Kings Seeds Ownership News 🌱 From Charlotte Connoley.

It is with great excitement that I share some very special news. Kings Seeds has officially passed from Gerard and Barbara Martin to our family, the Connoleys.

My husband Rob and I feel incredibly honoured to become the next custodians of Kings Seeds as we continue its journey toward an exciting 50-year milestone.
For generations, Kings Seeds has been woven into the fabric of home gardening here in New Zealand, helping gardeners grow everything from their first handful of lettuce seedlings to flourishing backyard food gardens. To now become part of that story is something we feel deeply grateful for.

One of the values that has remained important throughout all three generations of Kings Seeds ownership is that the business has stayed proudly New Zealand-owned and operated. We believe there is real value in keeping local knowledge, decision-making, and investment here in New Zealand.

As the world continues to change, supporting New Zealand businesses that contribute to our food-growing culture, gardening communities, and environmental resilience feels more important than ever. For us, it’s about staying connected to the needs of New Zealand gardeners while continuing to invest back into the people, communities, and future of growing here at home.

Looking ahead, our commitment is to continue building on the wonderful legacy created by Ross and Glenys King, followed by Gerard and Barbara Martin, while continuing to support and inspire gardeners across the country for generations to come.

From our family to yours, thank you for being part of the Kings Seeds community. Your support means the world to our incredible team here at Kings Seeds and to us. We are so excited for this next chapter and cannot wait to grow alongside you. ~ Charlotte

Why have some herbs stayed in gardens for centuries?

Long before supermarkets, pharmacies, and the internet, people relied on plants growing close to home.

Some were grown for herbal teas. Some for traditional wellness preparations. Some for cooking. Some for pollinators.
And some simply because they were beautiful and useful to have nearby.

That's why herbs like Borage, Sage, Valerian, Echinacea, Feverfew, Penny Royal, Astragalus, Black Cumin, Basil Tusli, Mullein, Lady's Mantle, Evening Primrose, Lavender and Chinese Angelica, among many medicinal herbs, have continued to be grown generation after generation.

While their traditional uses vary, gardeners kept planting them because they found value in them. We love that these are still useful & beautiful in the garden today, just as they were hundreds of years ago.

Herbal Infusions. For generations, herbs have traditionally been infused into oils, vinegars, tinctures, salves, teas, and botanical preparations.

Many gardeners simply love growing medicinal* herbs not only for their traditional uses, but for the beauty, scent, and pollinator support.

Common ways herbs are traditionally prepared at home:
• herbal-infused oils
• tinctures
• herbal teas
• infused vinegars
• bath soaks
• steam bowls
• dried herbal blends

A simple herbal oil infusion method:
• Fill a clean dry jar loosely with herbs
• Cover completely with carrier oil (examples: coconut, jojoba, sweet almond or grapeseed)
• Store in a cool dark place for several weeks
• Strain before use

We have over 50 medicinal herb products in our online collection. Browse our site and gain inspiration today. https://www.kingsseeds.co.nz/collections/medicinal-herb

🌼 A little chamomile fact for the garden nerds…

One of the easiest ways to tell German and Roman chamomile apart is actually inside the flower centre.

• German Chamomile flowers have hollow cone-shaped centres
• Roman Chamomile flowers have more solid, compact centres

German chamomile is typically taller and produces more flowers for harvesting, while Roman chamomile grows lower and spreads across more of the garden.

Tiny details… but they make identification easy once you notice them.

Save this for your future herb garden.

Thanks Sonia for sharing your seedling reset after an unsuccessful round. 💚

We all have seasons that need a refresh sometimes, and we really appreciate the peek inside how you reset, regroup, and start again.

Also… great idea with the labels. We always think we’ll remember what we planted, and so many of us are guilty of forgetting.

Sonia gardens in Zone 3, Kaiapoi in North Canterbury, and has created a beautiful urban microclimate within her food forest garden. This means she can plant certain varieties now because she knows what works well in her space and climate.

That’s one of the beautiful things about gardening at this time of year. It’s all about learning your garden and working alongside it.
