We have a really lovely Hydrangea variety called 'Merveille Sanguine', which, when young in the pots in a more neutral pH soil, they will have a rich crimson/pink coloured flower. In a more clay based acidic garden soil, after a few years, the flowers turn a rich purple colour.

For pink flowers, add lime to the soil, for purple flowers, mulch with peat or pine needles or feed with an acid plant food.

Not everyone believes me when I tell them that these are the same variety of plant. Let me know what you think - which is your favorite?

GIANT PUMPKINS! have you seen these at the local A&P Shows, and thought 'I would love to grow these'?

Here is your chance! Here at Kaipara Coast Plant Centre we have a limited number of Giant Pumpkin seedlings available. Now is the perfect week to plant them.

To get the biggest pumpkins they need lots of sun, lots of food, regular watering in summer, and a well drained soil.

We have a few quite different and unusual plants in Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens. Here is one that we love. It is a form of Bottlebrush called Callistemon 'Great Balls of Fire'. They grow in part shade or sun, and when they come out with new growth we just go 'WOW!'. They make great hedges, or just grow one to brighten a dark corner.
And yes, we do have some available for sale - the first time in around 6 years. https://kaiparacoastplantcentre.com/?s=callistemon+great+balls+of+fire

If you would like to offset some of the impact of the dramatic increases in food prices, particularly fresh fruit and vegetables and whether you have a large garden or more limited space, its definitely worthwhile considering growing your own.

This workshop, presented by our in-house expert David Bayly will give you all the basics of what, when and where to create your own kitchen garden and derive optimum value from it. Its also a very rewarding experience to see your plantings grow and to know that what you and the family are eating is derived from your own efforts. As well as being assured of its origins and purity.
