If your project triggers resource consent — and many do — it can feel like a black box. Here's what's actually involved.

Resource consent is required when your project doesn't comply with the District Plan rules for your site. This might relate to height, setbacks, coverage, or the character of the neighbourhood.

The process typically involves:

→ A pre-application meeting with Council
→ Preparation of plans, reports, and supporting documents
→ A public notification period (sometimes)
→ A decision — which can take weeks to months

We manage this process from end to end, including coordinating planners, engineers, and other specialists.

More questions about the consenting process?

Ask us in the comments or DM us directly. → link in bio for more info

🎓 Huge Congrats to Barney!

We couldn't let this one pass without a shout-out — today Barney graduates, and we're celebrating double: not only is he crossing the stage, but he's also been accepted into the University of Melbourne Masters programme and is heading over the ditch to take the next step in his architectural journey.

Barney has been a motivated and industrious team member for the past few months. His commitment, energy, and genuine enthusiasm for the work have made a real mark on our studio — and on the projects he's contributed to.

Barney shared: "Thanks for the work experience, it was fun and I learned a lot... huge thanks as I don't know if they would have accepted me if I didn't have work experience under my belt!"

Congratulations on graduating today, Barney — we're stoked for you and can't wait to see what comes next. 🏛️

Next-level sea views overlooking the Wellington Harbour! 🌊We lucked out with a stunning blue-bird day for this site measure. This hilly, 3-level site is spectacular, but it is going to be a complex reno. 🔨📐Stay tuned to see how we transform this incredible spot!

In Construction: A nifty little build by the beach

On a cool little section near the beach in Eastbourne, a nifty 65sqm footprint building has begun construction.

The 2 bedroom home — with off-street parking — has been expertly designed with sleeping and office space on the ground floor, and living / kitchen on the upper level, opening up onto a covered balcony facing the sea.

Key design moves:

→ Raked ceilings and skylights to allow high stud and ensure the space feels large, light and airy — drawing natural light deep into the living spaces

→ Abodo Vertical Shiplap in Walnut stain combined with wide Vertical Stria Fibre Cement Cladding feature walls — warmth, texture, and longevity in one move

→ An enclosed outdoor balcony linking living to landscape — the ocean in one direction, the bush on the hillside behind

→ Feature trapezoid windows along the roadside elevate the street façade and emphasise the dramatic gable roof form, creating a strong architectural identity

Set on a compact 142sqm site at 46% coverage, this project will be a true showcase of thoughtful small-scale living and clever construction.

If you've been putting off your kitchen or bathroom renovation for years — you're not alone.

We hear it constantly. People know their space isn't working, but the process feels overwhelming before it's even started.

Here's the truth: the hardest part is usually just starting the conversation. Once you know what's possible — and what it actually involves — most of our clients wish they'd done it sooner.

A well-designed kitchen or bathroom doesn't just look better. It changes how you feel in your home every single day.

If yours has been on the list for a while, let's talk. No pressure, no obligation — just a honest conversation about what's possible.

We're working on a great community housing project, and the project manager and client have been gushing at the concept designs presented. So nice to have 'wow's' in response to our work. 😁

This thoughtfully designed two-storey townhouse is now on the market and ready for new owners!

Architecturally, the scheme adopts a clean, contemporary language — mono-pitch roof forms, a restrained material palette, and generous glazing to maximise light and connection.

This home is set in a quiet well located street, offering open-plan ground floor living, seamless indoor–outdoor flow to a private 20m² courtyard, and well-considered upper-level bedroom zones.

Designed for modern urban living, this home includes:

- Four double bedrooms plus a study
- Master bedroom with ensuite
- Full family bathroom with bath & shower
- Separate guest toilet downstairs
- Light-filled open-plan living
- High ceilings enhancing space and light
- Sunny, north-facing backyard
- Internal access garage

As part of a development in collaboration with SPICEBUILD, watch out for more of these architecturally designed townhouses coming to market soon.

ANZAC Day | Remembrance in the Built Environment

On ANZAC Day, we reflect not only through ceremony, but through the spaces that hold memory.

Remembrance architecture gives physical form to collective loss, service, identity and peace. Memorial architecture often is restrained, landscape-integrated design — emphasising emotional honesty, reflection, and community connection.

From landmark memorials to quieter, integrated spaces, the role of architecture remains the same — to create pause, meaning, and memory within our built environment.

Across the world, there are many amazing examples of memorial architecture - a few are shown here, images L-R:

1. Peter Eisenman & Buro Happold, Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (Holocaust Memorial), Berlin
2. Tonkin Zulaikha Greer, Australian memorial, Pukeahu National War Memorial Park, Wellington

This month marks Grant’s 13 year anniversary at Moore Design.

A huge milestone — and a reflection of the experience, consistency, and contribution he brings to the team and every project he’s involved in.

Grant is such a valued member of the team, our dependable go-to person to sound out an issue or an idea. And he’s in every team photo since we started taking them 😊.

What’s changed the most?
“The level of compliance required to get a building consent approved.”

What stands out most?
“I really enjoy the one-off bespoke new builds. Having a blank canvas and creating something unique for each client is the most rewarding.”

What’s kept him here?
“The people I get to work with — and the type of work we produce.”

Something learned over 13 years?
“Never assume anything.”

A standout moment?
“Our Queenstown trip — getting snowed in for a couple of extra days. Not a bad place to be, and a great chance to relax with the team.”

Grant, thank you — a huge milestone, and a big part of the Moore Design story.
