Thorndon House Alterations.
Houghton Architecture's very first commission. Interior alterations to an existing house in Thorndon with a long history of transformation, including a major alteration in the 80's by Jasmad (who would later become Jasmax).

The brief for this project was to revitalize a tired and outdated swimming pool area at a residential address in the Hutt valley. An existing pool house needed an upgrade to include a new bathroom and changing facility, and to modernize the dated existing building.

Set on a difficult hill site in the Wellington hill suburb of Khandallah, this project involves the removal of an existing single dwelling and the construction of 6 new highly appointed townhouses across two discrete buildings. The new complex has been designed to work with the existing site topography and take advantage of stunning views over Wellington City and Harbour.

This new house on the Kapiti Coast is situated on a newly sub-divided rear site. Designed as a high-quality investment property for the owners of the original site, the new single storey, 3-bedroom house is designed to appeal to a range of potential occupants. On approach, the house is modest in scale and form with a simple palate of practical materials. Upon entry is a large open plan living space with large expanses of floor to ceiling glazing opening out onto generous areas of external decking which wrap around the house and gently step down to spacious yards to the north and west. A high, vaulted ceiling through this space increases the sense of volume and spaciousness.

Island Bay House

The brief for this project was to create a cohesive open plan living space, with better sun and a more usable outdoor space that was better connected to the house. As with many old houses, the planning of the existing house was disjointed and had separated the living room from the dining and kitchen area. Our solution was to extend and remodel the north end of the house, creating an open living space which connected to new decking and a raised lawn on the north side of the house via large bi-folding doors. The reimagined north elevation gives the house an improved sense of entry and a new aesthetic which is sympathetic to the original house, but has a stronger presence when viewed from the street. This project was designed as the first stage of a two-stage project to improve and expand the house.
