Automatic gate options. The easiest and cheapest is a sliding gate as long as you have sufficient level ground for the open position. Next up are double swing gates. These are a fairly cost effective option but again there needs to be enough clearance of vehicles parked in the driveway. The third option is a cantilever gate - ideal for driveways that slope across the width or the gate opens over uneven or an unsealed driveway. When space is limited there are mechanisms that stack the leaves of the gates so less room is required in the open position. None of this is cheap so you need to think of having a minimum budget of $8000 before considering automatic gates. Budget gate ranges by Practical and Posh. Our budget gates are not cheaply made gates. In keeping with our experience of making custom heritage style gates we still take extra care in achieving a good finish. We cut timber to length using a fine tooth saw, rather than a quick but rough docking saw. We don't just staple our gates together. We use glue and ring-shanked nails to fix the palings to the braced frame. These are simple, affordable gates that can be made to look absolutely stunning with creative paint choices. The gates are priced, $180 for the 1000mm tall gate, $210 for the 1200mm tall gate and $280 for the 1800mm tall gate. Two designs are available in all sizes. A simple curved top our a pointed picket. Both design encourage rain to run off quickly so the top of our gates don't become cracked and split if tey are kept painted. In line with the times we've designed a range of budget gates. All are 900mm wide and vary in height from 900, 1200 to 1800. Costs range from $220 - $280 and we can also supply a hinge and latch package for a very completive rate. Delivery nationwide x $90. At Practical & Posh we made our client a new gate in the style of their original gate, which was falling apart. Our clients also wanted to re-use the numerals and the old brass latch which was broken. We repaired the latch and then installed the gate. The big guys of New Zealand gates have closed down their woodworking shops and are now only importing aluminium gates made in China. It's the way of the world but that's how traditions and skills die. Sales people will tell you that aluminium needs no maintenance but they won't tell you about Horyuji Temple - the oldest wooden building in the world at 1300 years of age - or our own wooden Government Building in Wellington completed in 1876. We made this gate as a replacement for a sadly neglected gate that was beyond repair. The original was inspired by the arts & crafts design movement of the 1850s. We copied the design faithfully, using treated durable timbers so the gate should be sound for at least 100 years.
