This morning's 'blue' sturgeon supermoon hanging brightly above Te Wharepapa – Arthur Range.
A supermoon occurs when a full moon syncs up with a close swing around Earth, and is low on the horizon, creating an optical illusion of appearing larger. This is the first supermoon of the year, we usually get 3 or 4 per year.
A blue moon describes when we get multiple full moons in a given period. This occurs about once every two-and-a-half years.
And the sturgeon part of the name originates from Native American tribes that often caught these fish during the August full moon.
