Native Landscape Design had the privilege to whakataiaohia the stage for Te Matoe o Te Reo 2026 with a selection of plants from our nursery.
creating a lush backdrop of native plants for the event.

we even heard that a rō - a praying mantis - came up to the mic to have its say. 😅

Ngā Rau Matatiki

We celebrated the opening of these whare Kaumātua on Friday morning after a solid effort from the Native crew and the team at Profound Group

🗻

Ngā Rau Matatiki refers to the movement of springwater and the processes as that water moves through the ground. Starting from the Maunga, the water filters through the layers of rock under us and then back up to the surface as puna wai - to compliment this theme, the landscape design features different kinds of rocks and semi wetland style native planting.

🪨🪨

We also ensured two kōhatu were saved on site and re-purposed. one has a natural bowl that holds water and the other has a rau design etched in that we only discovered when we moved it into position.

Speaking of kōhatu, five mauri stones were gathered from the Maunga by Te Poihi and the team at Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa. one for each whare. These were buried at the entrance and
the colours of these stones are shown in the colour design of the five whare.

This has been one of our favourite projects so far, being on board in the design stage and being able to bring it to life on site (especially im the last week)

🌿🌿🌿 A massive mihi manahau to everyone involved in the process from the team at Native 🌿🌿🌿

A kō has been featured in the logo of Native Landscape Design since its inception - as a link between modern landscape design, and the practices of our tīpuna.

This kō which we blessed yesterday, will be used ceremonially to begin each new landscape - with kaitiakitanga and manaakitanga of Papatūānuku as one of our main principles. ka mua, ka muri.

e mihi ana anō ki a Jo Barber te kaiwhakairo 🙌🏾🙌🏾

At Native Landscape Design, our mahi is guided by these principles: tino rangatiratanga, kaitiakitanga, and manaakitanga.

At a local governance, commercial and public level we believe Māori voices deserve to be present and heard in the decisions that shape our whenua.

Because of this, we’ll be focusing our mahi on partnering with councils and organisations who continue to uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Māori representation i ngā wā kātoa i ngā wāhi kātoa.

HTPkT Taiao business showcase.

we had a great time solidifying relationships within the taiao space and meeting other māori businesses who work within their own distinct taiao niches. shoutout to the group of rangatahi that came by too.

for Native it's about bringing the taiao to the people and Indigenizing landscape design.

Something a little bit outside of my usual scope of landscape design...

I was recently commisioned by Profound Group to design a kōwhaiwhai window frosting for their new office space.

Windows are a transitional space, a place where two realms meet - this kōwhaiwhai design represents movement between two realms.
As Profound Group design and plan new whare, this design is intended to help guide them through that realm of creation, both in the office space and out.

the team at Speedy Signs New Plymouth did an excellent job installing the design.
