Significant heavy rain and easterly gales for the upper North Island on Wednesday and Thursday
A deep subtropical low approaches the country from the northwest later this week, with an associated front expected to move over the upper North Island from Wednesday through to early Friday, bringing sustained heavy rain and severe easterly gales to many areas of the upper North Island.
Watches for heavy rain and strong winds are now in force.

Heavy Rain Watch
Area: Northland
Period: 33 hours from 6:00am Wed 16 Apr to 3:00pm Thu 17 Apr
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain, and amounts may approach warning criteria and possibly exceed them.
High chance of upgrading to a Warning.
Impact: Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. Surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions possible.
Action: Clear your drains and gutters to prepare for heavy rain. Avoid low-lying areas and drive cautiously.
Strong Wind Watch
Area: Northland
Period: 27 hours from 3:00pm Wed 16 Apr to 6:00pm Thu 17 Apr
Forecast: Easterly winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.
High chance of upgrading to a Warning.
Impact: Damage to trees, powerlines, and unsecured structures possible. Driving may be difficult, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.
Action: Prepare your property by securing items that can be picked up by strong winds. Drive cautiously.
