Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with urushi lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold.
In this case it’s cracked Oamaru limestone.

As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.

Restoration on Ribble Street Oamaru!
Lot 11 originally “Bruce’s brothers” fish mongers in 1914 has had some tender love and care recently, the original corner stone that had been veneered over was and exceptional find as well as the original “Bruce’s” sign which we delicately preserved during it’s restoration to show case this building’s history.
I absolutely love historical buildings and being apart of the history is very rewarding.
Who knows how many treasures Oamaru has to offer!

No one ever said “let’s cuddle up in front of the heat pump”!! 😉😂

This nearly 140 year old open fire at The Brydone Hotel needed a new fireback, as this is what takes most of the heat.

Rebuilding with the correct angle’s and dimensions ensures good draw, reflecting heat back into the room but keeping the smoke going up the chimney.

I’ve added a couple of other examples of firebacks I’ve rebuild over the years.

In the middle of winter 🥶 why not think about a summer project having your Oamaru limestone cleaned an re sealed to protect it from the elements, mould and mildew.
With 17+ years as a stone mason I can handle any repairs or other maintenance that the chemicals used to clean may not fix.

This client had a few ideas….
-A garden wall to block the southerly wind
-A work space to hold a half tonne pizza oven
-Wood storage
-Garden planters

As I built we brainstormed….
-Lights for night entertaining
-A power plug for a deep fryer

Extra bonuses…
-Doubles as a bomb shelter if you take the wood out
-It will be enjoyed for generations, built to last many lifetimes.

Really enjoyed seeing out the project from an idea to completion 😃
