Kat's Flora

Kat's Flora NZ plant collector enjoying the challenge of growing plants. Especially the weird, unusual, or hard-to-find ones. Plus, unique one-of-a-kind items.

It seems I have always been interested in plants, right from an early age, I had my own piece of garden. My passion has altered over the years and now seems to be concentrated on succulents, euphorbias, plants that grow a caudex (including ceropegia), dischidia, and hoyas. Also, love bulbs and .... heaps of other things. I also have dabbled in crafts over the years, having recently returned to d

oing pottery. So have decided to focus on plant-related plant items. Pots, plaques, labels etc. Open to requests and suggestions. I have quite a severe hearing loss, so my little business is my only personal income.

Borrowed from elsewhere....

my brain and
heart divorced

a decade ago

over who was
to blame about
how big of a mess
I have become

eventually,
they couldn't be
in the same room
with each other

now my head and heart
share custody of me

I stay with my brain
during the week

and my heart
gets me on weekends

they never speak to one another

- instead, they give me
the same note to pass
to each other every week
and their notes they
send to one another always
says the same thing:

"This is all your fault"

on Sundays
my heart complains
about how my
head has let me down
in the past

and on Wednesday
my head lists all
of the times my
heart has screwed
things up for me
in the future

they blame each
other for the
state of my life

there's been a lot
of yelling - and crying
so,

lately, I've been
spending a lot of
time with my gut

who serves as my
unofficial therapist

most nights, I sneak out of the
window in my ribcage

and slide down my spine
and collapse on my
gut's plush leather chair
that's always open for me

~ and I just sit sit sit sit
until the sun comes up

last evening,
my gut asked me
if I was having a hard
time being caught
between my heart
and my head

I nodded

I said I didn't know
if I could live with
either of them anymore

"my heart is always sad about
something that happened yesterday
while my head is always worried
about something that may happen tomorrow,"
I lamented

my gut squeezed my hand

"I just can't live with
my mistakes of the past
or my anxiety about the future,"
I sighed

my gut smiled and said:

"in that case,
you should
go stay with your
lungs for a while,"

I was confused
- the look on my face gave it away

"if you are exhausted about
your heart's obsession with
the fixed past and your mind's focus
on the uncertain future

your lungs are the perfect place for you

there is no yesterday in your lungs
there is no tomorrow there either
there is only now
there is only inhale
there is only exhale
there is only this moment

there is only breath

and in that breath
you can rest while your
heart and head work
their relationship out."

this morning,
while my brain
was busy reading
tea leaves

and while my
heart was staring
at old photographs

I packed a little
bag and walked
to the door of
my lungs

before I could even knock
she opened the door
with a smile and as
a gust of air embraced me
she said

"what took you so long?"

I attended a 'Plant Swap' a couple of months ago, and there were some Rosemary sprigs that no one seemed to want, so I took them.

As often happens, someone gave me plant advice, "Pop them into water, they will root easily."

I am not a big believer in water propagation, but I had enough cuttings to do a test.

So both of these were put into each of these containers on the same day. The water was changed a couple of times, but it didn't matter what I did; the ones in water never even started to root. Naturally, I gave up even trying after a while.

But the ones in propagation mix are looking really promising.

Pyrostegia venusta - Orange Trumpet vine

An outstanding plant to have in your winter garden, as its cheerful colour really makes for a nice surprise on these wintry days.

Mine grows along a short fence and gets pruned well when it tries to expand too much.

Seems very versatile, as it can be grown over things, trained as an espalier, as a lush ground cover, or as a hillside stabilizer.

Who else has this beauty growing in their garden?

So I did something I've been putting off... kiln maintenance! Cleaning out all the little bits from the previous blow-out disaster, and tending to the kiln shelves etc.

This involved scraping all the old layers off, smoothing it, and recoating it with new kiln wash. Left them to dry, forgot about my many assistants and came back to this, grr.

Gotta love them, little helpers. Another day, another layer. This time I did not leave them in the sun to dry, but put so the kittens can't get on them.

These Brugmansia Noel's Bush are still trying to flower. I thought they would have got their tops blasted by frost by now, but nothing seems to upset them.

I will give them a prune to encourage them to keep bushy and compact. Hopefully, the new colours will flower for me next season.

Do you also have these and enjoy their display and evening scent?

Managed to get into the tunnel houses today, with the hose. It's been a bit tricky lately:
1/ cause I don't need the kittens zooming through and upsetting all the pots and
2/ I want a nice warm day for winter watering.

These Curio articulatus variegata caught my eye, with their new season growth with all that 'pinkness'.

This is Midge, one of those 3 ginger kittens that now own us.

This is the first time, I've ever had multiple ginger kittens, and they all look almost identical. The female has white sox and bib, but the boys ... unless you see them up close it's so hard to tell the difference. One does have more white on the tip of his tail, but when they zoom past, who's looking at tails?

Anyone else had such similar-looking pets?
