Let’s talk about succession planting 🌱

It may seem like your garden is full right now, but as we move into spring, many of the crops that were growing over winter will soon start to go to seed.

That’s where succession planting comes in, which is just a fancy term for planting smaller quantities more often and in rhythm with the natural cycles of your garden.

The best part is that you don’t need to wait for a whole garden bed to become empty, or worry about having a large area to prepare all at once. You can simply plant between existing rows, replace crops as they finish, and stagger your planting so you always have something coming along behind.

And if all of this planning feels a little overwhelming, that’s where we can help with our monthly seedling boxes. We’ve done the succession planning for you, so all you need to do is plant, grow, harvest, and enjoy!

Got peas in your garden? 🫛

As the days are getting longer and the weather is starting to warm, our winter-planted peas are just about ready for a burst of spring growth!

A little guidance now can help them find their way onto the trellis, keeping the plants upright and the foliage off the soil as they grow.

In this video, we're showing you how we gently guide and loosely tie our peas to the trellis, helping set them up for healthy growth and good harvests this spring.

And because we want to keep the harvest going, we're also planting our next crop of peas this month, which will be included in our September seedling box 🌱 📦

By staggering our plantings, we can enjoy peas over a longer period rather than having everything ready at once.

Ever noticed how peas climb? 🫛

Those curly little tendrils near their growing tips aren't actually stems, they're modified leaves!

Over time, peas have evolved these specialised leaves that allow them to use other structures for support rather than investing lots of energy into building a strong, self-supporting stem.

By using their surroundings for support, pea plants can put less energy into building a rigid stem and more into leaf growth, flowering, and seed pods.

Pretty genius right!?

With spring just around the corner, our winter-planted peas are about to take off, and their tendrils will be busy reaching out for something nearby to climb.

While they're still young and finding their way, they can benefit from a little guidance towards their trellis and some extra support getting established.

We'll be sharing a how-to video soon showing you how to gently guide and tie your peas onto their trellis, helping them climb towards the light and get ready to produce flowers and pods.

August in the māra 🌱

This month, we topped our gardens up with lots of cool-season plants including —

• Radish
• Beetroot
• Rocket
• Silverbeet
• Sprouting Broccoli
• Lettuce
• Sweet Allysum
• Coriander

This mix of companion plants will grow through the cooler months, ready to replace our overwintered crops as they begin to go to seed and provide fresh harvests as we move into spring.

August is an exciting time in the garden. It’s when the temperatures finally start to rise and we transition from winter planting into spring planting.

It also means that our overwintered crops are beginning their slow process of setting seed, so it’s important to think ahead and start replacing them for ongoing harvests.

If that feels overwhelming, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! We have meticulously planned each month to suit the seasons, so all you need to think about is planting your seedlings in the ground and enjoying their harvests.

Our August boxes are available in three sizes, with a seasonal mix of vegetable, flower and herb seedlings delivered straight to your door, plus garden guidance to help you at every step of the way.

How we installed our garden trellis 🌱

With our raised garden bed built, the next step was installing a trellis to support our climbing crops.

There are plenty of ways to build a trellis, but for us, strength, durability, and simplicity were the priorities.

We chose reinforcing mesh because it's easy to install, built to last, and strong enough to support heavy summer crops.

Take these steps when installing a simple mesh trellis:
• Drive two steel standards into the ground on either side of the bed
• Secure the mesh using galvanised tie wire
• Trim any excess mesh level with the tops of the standards

A huge thank you to ITM Te Puke for generously donating the reinforcing mesh for this project.
