Meet the Team: Edward Currie - Committed to Quality Trees and Happy Customers 👍🌳

What does a typical day look like for you at Leafland?
The majority of my time is spent interacting with landscapers and customers, preparing quotes and processing orders. I also work closely with our operations team to ensure orders are organised and dispatched in a timely manner. No two days are really the same, which is one of the things I enjoy about my role at Leafland.

What are your favourite trees to recommend? (And why?)
My favourites would have to be the Pyrus (Ornamental Pear) and red maple families. They’re both stunning feature trees that can bring a lot of character to an outdoor space.
For smaller gardens, Michelia ‘Inspiration’ would have to be one of my top choices. It’s one of Leafland’s bestsellers and is a great all-rounder for smaller spaces.

If you weren’t at Leafland, what would you be doing?
I’d definitely be playing a team sport or working somewhere outdoors, whether that was farming, landscaping or something similar. I’ve always enjoyed being outdoors and keeping active, so working in a tree nursery for the last eight years has fortunately given me a bit of both.

What do you like about working at Leafland?
One of the things I enjoy most about Leafland is the culture and people — working alongside family, our team, landscapers and customers every day.
It’s rewarding to see the trees we grow leave the nursery and eventually become part of someone’s garden and living space.

What’s your vision for Leafland’s future?
The future of Leafland is exciting. The business has grown rapidly over the last 3–5 years, both physically and internally. With three sons now involved in the business and ongoing development of the nursery, there are plenty of opportunities to build on what we’ve already achieved.
Our mission is clear: to grow quality specimen plants and meet the specific needs of our landscapers, councils and customers. We want to continue growing the business while maintaining the quality and service that Leafland is known for.

Reflecting on a fantastic Trade Day in Hamilton! 🚛🌱🌳

Last week, our team travelled north with a selection of our specimen trees to showcase at Trade Day. The feedback was incredible!

The absolute highlight for us was getting to catch up with our clients and build new relationships across the vibrant commercial landscaping and horticulture sectors.

A big thank you to the organisers and to everyone who stopped by our stand to connect with our team. We’re already looking forward to working together on your upcoming projects! 🙌

Why is winter the best time to plant trees? 🌳❄️

When most people think about planting, they picture spring. But ask any grower or arborist, and they’ll tell you winter is where the magic happens!

While trees look like they’re taking a winter nap above ground, their roots are quietly doing the heavy lifting below the surface. Planting now gives them months to settle into the soil without the stress of summer heat, drying winds, or constant watering.

We’ve put together a quick guide on our blog breaking down why winter planting works so well across NZ.
