Project//Lath House, Manawatū

The next time you visit the Peter Black Conservatory, you'll be greeted by this beautiful, safe, and now accessible entrance. This special building will also house the city's impressive bonsai tree collection, generously gifted by the John Birch estate.

This stunning build is inspired by the fractal geometry of the bonsai—growing in 1/3rd proportions to its peak, which forms the main entry. Entirely made of timber, the design is both visually striking and tactile.

A massive thanks to our partners at and for making this joint venture a reality. We are so proud of this project and the community it will serve.

We're thrilled to share the design philosophy behind the new Lath House @ Palmerston North Esplanade.

Entirely constructed of timber and inspired by the fractal geometry of the bonsai tree, the structure grows in 1/3rd proportions to reach its peak that creates the main entry into the Lath House and Peter Black Conservatory.

This Project is a Joint Venture between 242am Architects + Team Architects Palmerston North.

Last Friday at the Western Architecture Awards 2025…what a night🤩

Kiwi Home is a high-performing house on a compact 400m² infill site, thoughtfully designed to frame the northern sky and a large boundary tree. It's spaces subtly reflect the client’s cultural roots and personal passions, extending a strong sense of place beyond its small footprint.

We feel privileged and blessed to create a facility with council and Kia Toa community that celebrates Manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, kotahitanga, and whakapapa.

We’ve received a proposal from Kia Toa Rugby Football Club to lease some land at Bill Brown Park.

If we grant this lease, Kia Toa Rugby Football Club plan to build a new clubroom there. They would fully fund, build, own and operate the clubroom themselves.
