Skimming involves applying a thin layer (approximately 2-5mm) of finishing plaster to an existing surface to create a smooth, paint-ready finish.
The first crucial step is to assess the current state of the wall. If the original plaster is loose, crumbling, or sounds hollow when tapped ("blown" plaster), simply skimming over it is not advisable. In such cases, the compromised plaster should be removed entirely before re-plastering. However, if the old plaster is stable, firmly adhered, and only has minor imperfections, skimming is a viable and cost-effective option.
