After 3 years the truck is finally almost ready to go on the road, there is just one hold up, funds have dried up and we are looking for sponsors to buy a deck and trailer, cost $50k, sponsors $5k and over will be sign written on the truck, we have set up a give a little page https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/1981-mc-mack-truck-restoration for those that can help with a few dollars towards our goal of $50k please....
1981 MC MACK TRUCK RESTORATION
Originally from Tuapeka in Dunedin, Gary (Armo) Armstrong Contracting bought the truck from Motortruck Dealership to Northland where it has done many years of work for Armo. The truck ended up with motor problems and sat under a tree at Robin Dickens yard in Maungaturoto for 14+ years looking eventually like it would never go again…
Glenn Battensby was only 18 years old when he first started driving this truck.
He had a bit of an oopsy when he crashed the truck into the back of his tractor denting the front bumper and panel… Armo said I bet he didn’t tell you that….
Glenn asked Armo if he could take the truck and get it going again….
Well what a task this was going to be, it took two days just to get it out from under the tree!
The truck has been under full restoration by Glenn and his brother Ross (Scooter) Battensby since 26/01/2021. At present the restoration has cost since March 2022 $261578.68 and there is also prior money spent which includes a $15000.00 cab only paint job and literally 100’s of unpaid labour hours from Glenn, Scooter and Frank and many others. We estimate that the cost would be to date around $400K if labour was included.
We recently had another oopsy but this time it was Scooter who reversed the truck out of the shed and hit his grader with the truck denting the new bumber and damaging the step…. We bought another new bumper and Waipu’s very own Andy Cameron did his magical panelbeating skills and fixed the step and panel for us at short notice.
We also have one of Waipu’s best signwriters… Wayne, also know as Bent Copper and Big F* Off Signs who has hand painted the bulldog and also done all of the other sign writing, this guy has some fabulous talent…
We have just put a new custom made diesel tank from Roadrunner on the truck and have already purchased a new ring feeder which is at Morgan Engineering in Whangarei awaiting a new deck and trailer.
The funds have unfortunately dried up and we are hoping for some sponsors to come on board and help us to purchase this last piece of the puzzle so we can finally get the truck back on the road. We need $50k for a deck and trailer and any large sponsors ($5k minimum) will have their name signwritten on the truck. Once on the road the truck will be doing the rounds on both the North and South Island. The truck still has it’s original registration plates on hold.
We have also started a give a little page for anyone who can spare a small amount towards this, as they say every cent counts!
