My first painting ever, given as koha to my beautiful kaitā

This one was a special one for me. This painting of Ōhaki marae was the place in which I received my moko kaue. It also marks the first mokopapa in Pawarenga, a huge milestone for our people going forward in reclaiming our taonga.

I think my favorite detail of this piece was the connection of Hinerākei, the wāhine depicted on the koruru, and her cave nestled into the maunga where her kōiwi rest ❤️ I also loved having our whanaunga point themselves out in the painting in the wharenui 😂

This has been about 3 months in the making, lots of late nights done on this piece, and so many lessons learnt throughout this process. Super excited for the next pieces, watch this space!

Big shoutout to my cuzzy who stayed up till 3.30am with me on the last few nights to tautoko me ❤️
