Thinking of building a granny flat in 2026? While you may not need a building consent anymore if you are building less than a standalone unit less than 70m2 there are other things to think about:
• The building will need to meet the NZ Building Code.
• You still need to meet the local council's planning rules (like how tall you can build and how close to the boundary).
• If you are Marlborough based, you will probably need to pay an MDC ‘development contribution’ which can be $20000 - $30000.
