🌳KĀWHIA TREE WINS TREE OF THE YEAR!🌳
We're so proud that the sacred Pōhutukawa Tangi Te Korowhiti tree in Kāwhia is the inaugural winner of Rākau o te tau / Tree of the year NZ Aotearoa!!

Tangi Te Korowhiti received 1,736 votes, out of the total 6,268 votes received from tree lovers around the country.

Named Tangi Te Korowhiti the Pōhutukawa holds a special place in New Zealand history. According to Tainui tradition, the Tainui canoe was hauled ashore at the end of its voyage from Hawaiki and moored to the tree as its final destination. This tree remains as one of the most culturally significant living tāonga for all New Zealand.
