Bossley Architects

Bossley Architects Bossley Architects is an architectural and interior design practice based in Auckland Our buildings and masterplans recognise sound urban design principles.

Bossley Architects is an award-winning New Zealand architectural and interior design practice, recognised for its creative and innovative design. Based on the belief that great buildings are good for us all, we design buildings which evoke sensations and meanings arising from their location, culture and history, by being part of their place and time, without falling back on nostalgia. We look beyo

nd the immediate project to embrace wider social and environmental issues, and believe the best buildings spring from an open collaboration between architect, client and consultants. Buildings that respect issues of functionality, by being eminently buildable and within budget, and sustainability, by utilising orientation to topography, sun and wind, by incorporating passive and active heating/cooling/ventilation systems, by minimising energy use, and by incorporating accredited sustainable and/or recycled materials. We are signatories to the NZ Urban Design Protocol and members of the Urban Design Forum. Whilst being very much design focused, the practice has an overriding interest in the pragmatics and feasibility of construction. There is considerable hands-on building experience amongst the personnel, and buildings are carefully detailed with construction methods in mind. We regard each project as a new possibility requiring unique architectural expression. We listen carefully to our clients requirements, and incorporate their desires into our design approach. Our uncompromising attitude towards design quality has led to numerous award-winning projects. Our aim is to design buildings which lift the spirits, which offer pleasure and excitement.

Pete and Miriam ran an energetic and fun-filled drawing class for 140 or more attendees at the Architectural Designers of NZ Conference in Dunedin. 'The Hunt for a Good Idea' proposed we search for a subject through drawing, rather than drawing a subject. The groups attacked their paper with gusto and enthusiastically produced dozens of drawings which later appeared on the walls for the next days presentations. The Dunedin Town Hall took on a whole new atmosphere!

Back in March 2025 we had the pleasure of showing George Clarke and his crew around the Waterfall Bay house, for episode 5 of the Homes in the Wild series. The house was covered beautifully by the team, and George was impressed: in an interview in the Post he described it as “genuinely one of the best houses I’ve seen in my career". Thank you George, we appreciate it.

Thank you to our wonderful hosts.
If you missed it you can see the house and many other great pieces of NZ architecture in George Clarkes Homes in the Wild on Neon.

Great to be part of the current Objectspace show 'Rendered Futures' in Auckland. Another superb show by the team. We have a couple of works, both on tablet. One is a little movie of Finn Scott and Pete Bossley developing a plan, both drawing on a tablet with Morpholio Trace. Watch as the layers overlay and the plan appears. The other is 80+ drawings from Pete's phone. Drawn on a Samsung in Sketchdraw. Pete calls them Tings. They are not drawings, nor are they things. They are Tings!

Check out the show, it is well worth the time.

Pete kicked off the 2025 season of Fast Forward lectures on Auckland with an exciting hour entitled The Hunt for a Good Idea. Sketches, diagrams, paintings and architecture all jostled to express ways they contribute to the processes by which strong ideas appear and contribute. Shout out to Andrew Barrie for organising the series, again. And thanks to Miriam van Wezel for the images.
