Did you know we prune fruit trees? We can tidy up your backyard orchard to maximize production and health, as well as aesthetics. You can work with us if you'd like to learn about your trees so you can confidently prune your own next year and every year after! We also do a couple of pruning workshops over winter (date to be confirmed). Contact to register interest in a workshop or to get a quote for pruning. We're open Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 73 Wildman Road, call 03 5287988 or message here

We've had a pretty sad couple of weeks, with a heavy heart I have to let you know Dash passed away. He didn't quite make his 16th birthday, the lovely old boy. Thanks to Vet Life Motueka for coming out to the house. We planted a Dogwood Stokes Pink on his grave. We will miss him dearly😢😔
Rosie was extremely subdued and very listless. We took her to the SPCA in Nelson to meet a new possible buddy and we have adopted Trevor, a 1 year old Huntaway. He's made Rosie (and us all) smile again. He's very cuddly and learning all the new rules fast. He has a Huntaway voice and will learn to use it at appropriate times as he gets used to his new routine and family. Until then we have sealed in a yard for him. He will call out for a pat from behind the fence no doubt

I've germinated some Irish Moss and put them in 6 pack punnets. It's great for edges, around pavers or anywhere there's a gap to keep out the weeds and it's a perennial, so it'll be around as long as you require it. It's one of those plants that's nice in its own right, but brilliant to use as the background to other plants. I've always thought of white flowered plants as the page behind the picture, well Irish Moss has the same effect in my eyes. There are similar options for different situations and styles like scleranthus, chamomile, ground covering thyme or alpine phlox.
Have you ever had issues trying to keep the dead spots out of your scleranthus? Try walking on them or firming them down with your foot or sitting on them occasionally. The dead spot starts as the plant expands and forces the foliage away from the ground, so show it who's boss!

Welcome to all of you who are new to The Plant Barn!
This week the Malus Arrow Gold caught my eye. Such a pretty flash of yellow as the days have become chilly and they have blossom in late winter/early spring as well. They're a good choice for easy care summer shade. We also have 'ioensis plena' and 'Barbara Ann'

Autumn colour is quite stunning and taken for granted as a garden 'colour'. The amazing pinks, peach, and every shade of red, orange and gold. The pictures are of a field maple that slowly changes colour from the bottom up!
Changing leaves are a good reminder to spray your fruit trees and some ornamentals with copper, it's the most effective time of year to prevent leaf curl on peaches and nectarines as well as other fungal diseases. The reason is the leaf creates a small open wound on the tree when it falls, this is when infection will get in to the tree. I spray 3 or 4 times over autumn with all the fruit tree varieties here. Ideally you want to spray halfway through leaf fall and then again when all the leaves have dropped, this will give you optimum protection. You can spray again in spring when you see buds starting to swell if you're having issues with tree health.
We offer fruit tree pruning over winter. We can either do the job for you to get unruly trees behaving and fruiting, or we can work with you to help you understand what's required so you can confidently prune your own next year and into the future. Message or call in any Thursday to Saturday to book in

It's time to plant your elephant garlic! I have given up on every other variety, no matter if I plant it late March or early April, I just can't beat the rust. The warmer weather with showers set rust onto the plants before they mature. Not so with the hard neck elephant variety and it keeps just as well. We have locally grown cloves here ready for planting, $2 each or 20 for $35. Save enough this summer (ie try not to eat it all) to plant your own seed next year!

Sale on!
Until the end of April we're taking 15% off all plants. Fruit trees, shrubs, Shade trees, if it has roots I'll take 15% off it!

These beautiful murals have just been put up at Idea Services Motu day base. The whole team helped with the painting and what a great message! A lovely screen around their bbq tables and a nice view on my drive to pick up Laura!

The flower on the blood lily is larger than normal this year, considering it's in a pot. I've always found them reasonably insignificant here in pots, but this one is large and in charge, with a deeper red colour than usual too I think.
There's been a grey Herons nest above our place this year and a successful baby was raised. Terry had a rapore with the baby, it would look over the nest at him every time he went out that way. We were hoping we would see him (fledge?) fly for the first time. Yesterday morning it flew to the hedge and I wondered if it was a mistake and that's where he glided down to. Laura noticed him when he was already on the hedge. He flew up to a higher beech branch just before lunch and shortly after one of the parents was there feeding it in the new spot! He's still there this morning and it will be sad when they fly off, but check out the p**p on my lounge window and garden! I'll finally get to see out of it for more than a day! I wonder if they'll all fly off together or come in and out for a while then go? ie should I clean the window now or wait a few days?!! It was like pterodactyls swooping past the window sometimes when they were collecting nesting twigs from the yard. It's been fun watching them😊
