One NZ Godzone

One NZ Godzone One NZ GODZONE, the world's largest expedition adventure race hosted in New Zealand. GODZONE is New Zealand’s only multi-day, non-stop, expedition race. It is.

This annual event, run in March, hosts domestic and international teams from around the world. Mixed teams of four travel day and night with decisions to rest and sleep left solely to the discretion of the teams themselves. Teams navigate, trek, mountain bike, kayak over a vast array of different landscapes that test the mental and physical skills of participants to the ultimate limit. The route i

s kept secret from teams until the day before the race. There are multiple route options for teams, meaning strategic decisions will be very important. Competitors change from one mode of transportation to another at designated transition areas. The route traverses a distance of approximately 600km the fastest team will normally reach the finish line in about 5 days. Other teams will be allowed as many as 9 days to reach the finish

At designated transition areas, teams will have the chance to change clothes, restock food and drink and perhaps even grab an hour or two of sleep. Sound hard? But immensely rewarding to those who take part.

On paper Sara Stocker, Paul Bourgeois, Josh Scott & Ian Martella are a smart and experienced bunch of CEO’s, COO’s and MD’s. And as Team Allan Scott Family Winemakers they are avid adventurers at GODZONE.
What is the best part about training?
The adventures you go on as a team- training adventures are the best and the number one reason we like doing GODZONE. We go on such fun adventures and explore some great country and have such a good time.
What was the most fun thing on the C12 course?
When Marty decided to run the rock rapid by the washout bridge after we made a team decision not to as he wanted to put on a show for the people and we tipped out of our Packrafts in the freezing river! We giggled about that for ages!!!
What was the biggest obstacle you overcame?
Making a call too early in the event to miss checkpoint when we should have just settled down for the night, slept and regrouped in the morning. It was a decision that altered the whole race for us and we should have just taken time to refuel both mind and body cos we all regretted it and would have made a completely different decision. Over came it carried on! Love this race!
Plans for Chapter 13?
We are doing GZ again as it’s an 8 day adventure of seeing the best of back country NZ and challenging ourselves mentally and physically. It’s our 3rd time back for Allan Scott Family Winemakers- we are addicted to adventures and good times with mates 😊

Gliding with Richie McCaw never looked more majestic than in the sports film Chasing Great, which tracked the final 365 days of his rugby career. The film extensively features his lifelong passion for aviation, including incredible scenes of him gliding near his childhood stomping grounds and across the Southern Alps.
This is where GODZONE Chapter 13 is headed — a passion project like no other for Richie and the team, designing a route to challenge competitors and take teams deep into this extraordinary landscape.

From triathlon to adventure racing, high performance athletes Janus Staufenberg, Olivia Thornbury, Archie Ritchie and Riley Day of Team Southland Tri 6+6 pushed outside their usual sporting zone to go the full Pursuit distance at Chapter 12.
The best part about training: it didn’t feel like training more getting together as mates and going out for missions which allowed us to discover new places in our local areas. It opened up endless opportunities for weekend adventures where we could push our limits.
Most fun on course: we did love the pack rafting down the Wairau river and the comfort food and drinks from the locals out on course.
Biggest obstacles: was when a team member went a bit too far into the red zone, became unwell and was having a hard time getting going again. But that’s adventure racing, every team member experiences their ups and downs at different times. It’s about maintaining a close knit team, with open communication and working through these challenges step by step.
Do it again: We would absolutely do GODZONE again as we love the challenge and unknown aspect it brings. You get to experience unreal landscapes you wouldn’t otherwise touch whilst on a huge adventure that builds resilience and creates lifelong memories and stories which we will never forget.

“When you go through something like GODZONE together it’s something you never forget!” Sarah Murray, Michelle Rochford, Carla Murray & Natalie Harrex of rookie team Spring Challenge loved MOST of their GZ experience;
Most fun thing on course: coming in from each leg to a group of people cheering us on thanks to our support crew making friends with the amazing volunteers and other crews.
Biggest obstacle overcome as a team: in this race you are super vulnerable and really have to look after one another. Mild hallucinations, missing the kids, fatigue and physical struggles.
Best part of training: 4 chick’s doing what they love and getting to know each other on a new level.
The stage most liked: the hike-a-bike through the night. It was stormy with thunder, lightening & would have been terrifying in daylight seeing the drop offs.
Do it again: GODZONE takes you places you will probably never go unless you’re mad enough to say yes!

The camaraderie and shared experiences at GODZONE are life changing and compelling. "We loved our time racing across unknown territory and discovering hidden talents we didn’t know we had. The support crews were awesome and the sense of being on an adventure all together under the starts some nights were truly magical. A life changing experience for our team who didn’t think we could make it and then did so at the end!"
