Vertical Gardening from ‘the Past’ ...Is it ‘the Future’ too?
Pictured: Machu Picchu in Peru, is likely to be the origin of the New Zealand Kumara. And, it looks like it was brought to New Zealand on a voyage to find the promised lands in the pacific, in pre and post Christian times.
There are some huge benefits to gardening vertically, like this:
1. The efficient use of space, means you can grow more.
2. The efficient use of water and feed, means it costs less.
3. The efficient use of sunlight, means you can grow bigger.
And, if you take it a step further to container gardening, there are even more benefits:
4. You are able to grow better quality and more abundant crops because the plants get more attention, as they are ‘right in your face’. You can see and reach them more easily.
5. You can take a plant that’s a concern to you, in your car across town, to your ‘gardening uncle/aunty’ without trying to drag them, over to your place.
6. If the plants don’t like where they are, re: sun, rain, hail, wind, frost you can shift the plant or the whole rack in minutes.7. If you live in rental accommodation, you can take them with you.
8. We use deep-grow (food grade plastic) containers, which will allow you to grow almost any flower, herb or vegetable, and they are heat resistant. So they don’t overheat the soil, on sunny days.
9. Because the pots have their own space, you can grow different plants with different soil mix, feed, pH and watering, right next to each other.
10. Grow where you couldn’t normally grow.
