☀️ Why sun matters more than you think | Winhall Rise

A well-designed home doesn’t just respond to the site - it responds to the sun.

These studies were developed as part of our design process for the Winhall Rise project, to understand how light moves through the kitchen across different times of the year. The first clip shows summer, the second winter.

Sun location is a foundational element of passive design - influencing orientation, window placement, shading, and internal layout to improve comfort and energy efficiency.

By tracking the sun’s path - higher in summer, lower in winter - we can better manage solar gains, size overhangs appropriately, and reduce reliance on mechanical heating and cooling.

This kind of study helps inform a range of decisions early on:
• where spaces are positioned
• how much natural light is introduced
• how glare and overheating are managed
• how the room will actually feel to occupy

It also supports more detailed decisions - from window treatments to how light interacts with materials, furniture, and artwork.

Clients don’t always see this part of the process, but they experience the result - in the quality of light, the comfort of the space, and how it performs day-to-day.

Space & Privacy | Deacon Point

Space and privacy were key drivers in the design of this home at Deacon Point.

Rather than simply opening the house up to its surroundings, the focus was on creating a balance - allowing connection to the landscape while maintaining a strong sense of shelter and retreat.

Careful consideration was given to how the home is positioned on the site, how neighbouring properties are filtered, and how outdoor spaces can feel both open and protected.

This allows the home to open outward where it needs to - capturing views, light, and a sense of openness - while still providing quieter, more private spaces throughout.

It’s a good example of how space isn’t just about size, but about how it’s shaped, framed, and experienced day-to-day.

Smaller dwellings – what’s changing?

We’re seeing growing interest in smaller homes and minor dwellings, particularly with recent changes making them more accessible for homeowners across New Zealand.

In some cases, homeowners may now be able to bypass parts of the lengthy and expensive consent process traditionally associated with smaller standalone dwellings - opening up more possibilities for how these smaller homes can be delivered.

This shift is creating new opportunities for extended family living, guest accommodation, and making better use of an existing site.

But while the pathway may be simpler, it doesn’t mean the project is without planning or compliance requirements.

When you’re designing to a smaller scale, every square metre has to work harder. There’s less room to hide poor planning, which is why careful design becomes even more important - not less.

Feel free to reach out if you’d like a free guide that explains the new minor dwelling pathway and what it means in practical terms - pop us a DM.

Manly Beach | Progress Update

We first shared this project back in February, and now it’s quickly approaching completion.

With curved brickwork, beautifully detailed timber cladding beginning to silver naturally, and light pouring in from every angle, this home is really starting to take shape.

A project brought together through close collaboration, transparency, and teamwork between clients, contractors, consultants, and suppliers.

Looking forward to showing you more soon.

Most projects sit in the “thinking about it” stage for a while.

Not because people aren’t ready, but because they’re not quite sure what the next step is.

That’s usually where a conversation helps. We can talk through your ideas, what you’re hoping to achieve, and what might actually make sense for your site and budget.

Nothing complicated, just clear and practical guidance. We offer a complimentary, no-obligation consultation for that reason.

It’s relaxed and informative, and a simple way to move forward with confidence about what comes next.

Designing from a Distance | Working with clients who are based overseas is a part of what we do - whether you’re planning a move to New Zealand, returning home, or investing from afar.

Some are starting fresh, others are returning home, often drawn by the lifestyle, the landscape, and a sense of long-term stability.

Whatever the reasons, starting a build in a country without your feet on the ground can feel like a big step. Different processes, different regulations, and a lot of decisions to make without being in the country.

That’s where having the right team around you makes a real difference.

Our role is to guide the process clearly - from making sense of the site, coordinating with consultants and builders, through to consent and construction - so you feel informed and supported, wherever you’re based.

We place a lot of importance on communication and understanding how you want to live, so the design reflects that from the outset.

One of our clients who recently relocated shared this: “We were moving from the UK to NZ and could not find a property that worked for us. We decided to buy, demolish and rebuild - all a little daunting in a new country. Nick and the team guided us through the process with clear communication and a real understanding of our needs.”

If you’re based overseas and thinking about building or renovating in New Zealand, we’d welcome the opportunity to work with you. Feel free to reach out 📞 📧

Good homes are built on good relationships.

One of the things we value most is working closely with builders, contractors, and interior designers who care about the outcome as much as we do.

Because a well-run project isn’t just about drawings - it’s about communication, collaboration, and a shared commitment to getting the details right.

We’re fortunate to work alongside teams who take real pride in their work, and who stay engaged right through the process.

It makes a noticeable difference - not just in the end result, but in the experience along the way.

For our clients, that usually means fewer surprises, clearer decisions, and a build that feels more considered from start to finish.

A good team should feel like support - not something you need to manage.

If you’re planning a project and want a calm, collaborative approach around you, we’re always happy to chat 📲
