Winter can be a bit bleak, unless you have some hot magenta in your garden! Salvia iodantha doing what it does best, filling the 'living boundary fence' with trusses of vibrant colour. At various times of the day it is alive with tauhou, or silvereye, who love the nectar, plus all the bees and monarch butterflies too. It is a great winter food source for all the wildlife.
I always find it intriguing how the flowers look to be one-sided racemes at the end of all the branched flower stems, but on close inspection they are clustered whorls of flowers and buds all opening at different times, which gives you an extra long flowering time. The one-sided look appears as the flowers all face in the same direction, even the ones emerging from the 'back' of the cluster. Perhaps this is gravity-enhanced, with the weight of the flowers, or maybe it's just how this beauty rolls...

345mm rain...in one week! Other places probably had more...but given how soggy it is here I'm not surprised this previously-unknown Kniphofia seedling has been hiding under the protective skirt of the Avocado tree! I spotted it today and realised it's a little bit different...beautiful big flowers with that elegant golden-green combo, but the tube of each individual flower is flushed with a light peachy-red. A rather lovely discovery whilst out trudging around in gumboots...

Checking in on some babies today...of the small green kind!
Selinum wallichianum
Salvia x jamensis 'Royal Bumble'
Polemonium boreale
Salvia campanulata
Nepeta tuberosa
Agastache rugosa 'Alabaster'
Nicotiana langsdorfii 'Bronze Queen'
and Salvia bulleyana all coming along nicely...while a bunch of Dahlia merckii seedlings seem to have missed the memo about how Dahlias should go dormant in winter 😅

Plectranthus fruticosus 'Behr's Pride' seems to flower a little later every year now. Four years ago it was mid April, now it's almost late May...perhaps it's trying to tell me something?
Or maybe it's filling a gap, providing sustenance for the bees which seem very happy to be buzzing about amongst the flowers 🐝

Well here's a rather different Salvia x jamensis. Named 'Carys' by Geoff & Adair Genge of Marshwood Gardens, each lower flower lip is held aloft, as if offering a scallop shell chalice to the nectar-sipping insect gods. She really is very pretty...as well as a bit unique!

A forgotten pot of Aster 'Serendipity' flowering in the nursery today.
Love the colour of this one, originally a seedling from 'Little Carlow'.
I think I had best plant it...better late than never!
