Our plant breeding programmes at Blue Mountain Nurseries have been a passion since 1932. It helps us to develop and release new and exciting plants for the New Zealand market. Breeding work takes patience, meticulous record keeping, botanical skills and sometimes, luck! Chris Hughes, General Manager and plantsman with Blue Mountain Nurseries is currently trialling Totara for dwarf, variegated leaf and weeping forms. If all goes well, this work will be released to the market in autumn 2027.
